When Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress closed its doors at Magic Kingdom on July 5, 2026, Disney fans knew the beloved Tomorrowland attraction was preparing for its biggest makeover in over three decades. First introduced at the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair before finding its permanent home in Florida in 1975, the iconic revolving theater show had not seen a major narrative revision since 1994.

Now, as the attraction's anticipated late-spring 2027 reopening approaches, Walt Disney Imagineering is officially confirming new details about the reimagined experience. Between a preview exhibit at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and exciting recording studio announcements, Disney has revealed a poetic casting twist that links the show's past directly to its future.
A Full-Circle Voice Casting: Debi Derryberry Returns
In an announcement shared by Walt Disney Imagineering, voice actress Debi Derryberry is officially returning to the Carousel of Progress cast—this time taking on the role of Grandmother.

Longtime Disney parkgoers will recognize Derryberry’s voice right away. In the 1993 version of the attraction, she provided the voice of Patricia (Patty), the family's young daughter. For more than thirty years, millions of guests heard Derryberry talk about high-button shoes, line-shaft machinery, and 1990s virtual reality video games.
Outside her theme park work, Derryberry is an industry icon best known as the voice of Jimmy Neutron in Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, and for dozens of roles in animated films, television shows, and video games.

In studio photos released by Disney, Derryberry was seen bringing a fresh personality to Grandmother in the recording booth. The decision creates a full-circle moment for fans: the performer who played the daughter in 1993 will voice the family matriarch when the show reopens in 2027.
Derryberry joins a star-studded voice cast assembled for the updated show:
- Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Malcolm in the Middle) as Father (John).
- Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween, Freaky Friday) as Mother (Sarah).
Sneak Peek at Hollywood Studios: Costumes, Dioramas, and Walt Disney
While construction continues in Tomorrowland, guests can preview the ride's evolution inside Walt Disney Presents at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. A brand-new exhibit recently debuted in the gallery, showcasing costume pieces, character sculpts, concept art, and scene dioramas.

One of the display's most anticipated reveals is a brand-new introductory scene. The updated attraction will feature a prelude inspired by the 1964 television special Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair. Using cutting-edge Audio-Animatronics technology, a figure of Walt Disney himself will appear on a soundstage to introduce the show before the theater rotates into Act I.
This prelude pays homage to Walt Disney’s personal involvement in creating the original attraction for General Electric, connecting mid-century optimism with modern storytelling.
Overhauling the Eras of Innovation
The central theme of Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress has always been celebrating human achievement through the eyes of an American family across four distinct decades. However, the previous final act—featuring car phones, giant laserdiscs, and early voice-activated ovens—had become a dated time capsule.

The 2027 update completely transforms the timeline across four new eras:
- Act I (1969): Set during the summer of the Apollo 11 moon landing, this scene captures the family watching television, surrounded by late-1960s pop-culture decor.
- Act II (1985): Set on Halloween night, this act highlights personal computers, home video game consoles, VCRs, and 1980s fashion trends.
- Act III (1999): Set on New Year’s Eve as the family prepares for the year 2000, this scene explores the dawn of the consumer internet and mobile phones.
- Act IV (Distant Future): The final act leaps into a modern vision of smart-home technology and sustainable energy.

Display models at Hollywood Studios showcase Imagineering's attention to period costume design. For example, Mother's Act IV costume pairs a futuristic yellow-and-blue dress with beige trousers.
Reopening Late Spring 2027
By reuniting legacy performers like Debi Derryberry alongside Bryan Cranston and Jamie Lee Curtis, Imagineering is blending nostalgic history with fresh theatrical performances. Combined with the new Walt Disney Animatronic intro and fresh musical arrangements of the classic Sherman Brothers anthem “There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” the updated show is set to inspire parkgoers when it reopens in late spring 2027.
