Johnny Depp Replaced: Disney Officially Unveils Its New Captain Jack Sparrow

For more than two decades, the name Captain Jack Sparrow has been synonymous with one person: Johnny Depp. From the moment the dreadlocked, rum-soaked pirate sailed into Port Royal on a sinking dinghy in 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Depp made the role entirely his own. The performance earned him an Academy Award nomination, anchored five cinematic blockbusters, and generated billions for The Walt Disney Company.

Now, Disney is charting a bold new course. In a major milestone for the swashbuckling franchise, Laurence Olivier Award-winning actor George Maguire has officially been cast as Captain Jack Sparrow in the upcoming production Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Immersive Adventure. Staged by immersive theater titans Secret Cinema and TodayTix Group under license from Disney Theatrical Group, the London production marks the first time Disney has officially sanctioned another performer to headline a major narrative project as the iconic pirate captain.

Stepping Into Johnny Depp’s Boots: Who Is George Maguire?

Taking on a character so thoroughly defined by Johnny Depp is among the most daunting assignments in modern entertainment. Rather than attempting a pale imitation of Depp's eccentric screen presence, producers looked to Britain’s celebrated theater scene to find an artist capable of capturing Jack’s roguish spirit, rapid wit, and physical comedy in an immediate, live environment.

George Maguire brings a serious theatrical pedigree to the role. The acclaimed British actor and musician earned the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical for his standout turn as Dave Davies in the West End hit Sunny Afternoon. Musical theater fans also know Maguire from his performance as Buck Barrow in the acclaimed West End staging of Bonnie & Clyde.

With extensive experience in physical theater and rock-and-roll stagecraft, Maguire is uniquely equipped to embody Captain Jack's kinetic charm just inches away from theatergoers, translating Depp’s swagger into an intimate, interactive medium.

Assembling the Crew: Phil Daniels Joins as Barbossa

Maguire is backed by an impressive ensemble of seasoned British performers tasked with reviving the original 2003 film's beloved roster:

  • Phil Daniels steps into the boots of Jack’s ruthless adversary, Captain Hector Barbossa (originally played by Geoffrey Rush). A British cultural fixture, Daniels is famous for starring in the 1979 cult film Quadrophenia, his long tenure on the BBC soap EastEnders, and his iconic spoken-word vocals on Blur’s Britpop classic “Parklife.”
  • Lily Blunsom assumes the role of Elizabeth Swann, portraying the quick-witted, courageous governor’s daughter.
  • Harrison Wilde takes on Will Turner, the blacksmith-turned-swashbuckler, determined to rescue his love.
  • Gleanne Purcell-Brown rounds out the principal cast as the sharp-tongued privateer Anamaria.

The production is directed by Olivier Award winner Matt Costain, whose extensive background in circus arts and dynamic physical theater will bring the cinematic sword fights and nautical stunts to life.

Inside ‘The Immersive Adventure’ at Greenwich Peninsula

Rather than staging a traditional proscenium stage musical, Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Immersive Adventure drops audiences directly into the action.

Hosted inside Secret Cinema’s purpose-built flagship venue along London’s Greenwich Peninsula, the experience runs approximately two hours and fifteen minutes. The show seamlessly weaves iconic moments and clips from The Curse of the Black Pearl across massive, hyper-detailed physical sets. Attendees can trade the passive cinema screen for a walk through Tortuga’s taverns, dodge cutlass duels in Port Royal, and step aboard the creaking timbers of the Black Pearl alongside a live band and stunt performers.

Audience demand to see the post-Depp era unfold has already proven massive. Previews begin on February 16, 2027, ahead of an official gala opening on March 10, 2027. Originally scheduled for a strictly limited 10-week engagement, overwhelming global ticket sales prompted producers to immediately add a six-week extension, pushing the London residency through June 6, 2027.

What This Means for the Future of Pirates of the Caribbean

While Johnny Depp’s indelible contribution to pop culture remains secure, Maguire’s casting represents a major shift in Disney’s broader franchise philosophy. For years, development of future Pirates of the Caribbean feature films has been frozen by a central debate: can Captain Jack Sparrow exist without Johnny Depp?

By entrusting the tricorn hat and compass to George Maguire, Disney is putting that question to the test. If this ambitious London production proves successful, it will demonstrate that Captain Jack Sparrow has evolved into an enduring cultural archetype—like James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, or Batman—ready to be reimagined by new generations of world-class performers.
