Walt Disney World is preparing to make some major changes to one of its most recognizable resorts, and families planning future vacations may find that their favorite hotel rooms look completely different.
The upcoming project will bring redesigned accommodations, updated furniture, and a fresh approach to Disney storytelling. While the improvements could make rooms more comfortable, they will also replace designs that guests have enjoyed for years.

With construction expected to stretch into 2028, this won't be a small update. Disney is preparing to transform a significant part of the resort's guest experience.
Disney World Prepares Major Changes to Art of Animation
Disney's Art of Animation Resort is known for bringing beloved animated movies to life through oversized characters, colorful buildings, and heavily themed hotel rooms.
However, two of its popular room categories are preparing for a major transformation.
According to WDW News Today, which cited information obtained by WDW Magazine, Disney plans to begin refurbishing The Lion King family suites and The Little Mermaid standard rooms in mid-June 2027.
The project is expected to continue in phases through October 2028, with The Lion King accommodations receiving attention first.
The redesigned suites will feature warmer earth tones, green accents, lighter wood finishes, and new artwork inspired by The Lion King (1994).
Instead of relying as heavily on bold, cartoon-style decorations, the rooms will feature a more contemporary appearance while maintaining their connection to the movie.
The suites will continue accommodating up to six guests, making them an option for larger families visiting Disney World.
The Little Mermaid Rooms Are Also Getting Replaced
The changes won't stop with The Lion King.
Disney also plans to redesign The Little Mermaid rooms, introducing new furniture, updated sleeping arrangements, and refreshed character-inspired decorations.
Unlike the more subdued Lion King designs, these rooms are expected to retain a brighter appearance.
Aquatic blues, purples, and coral colors will help create an underwater atmosphere inspired by The Little Mermaid(1989).
A seashell-inspired headboard, character artwork, and smaller decorative surprises will also help maintain the Disney theming.
The proposed accommodations will sleep up to four guests, featuring a queen bed and a queen Murphy bed.
These changes could make the rooms more practical for families who need additional flexibility during their vacations.

Will Disney Lose Some of the Resort's Original Magic?
While updated accommodations sound appealing, the overhaul raises an important question.
Will Art of Animation still feel like Art of Animation?
Part of the resort's appeal has always been its larger-than-life Disney theming. Families choose this hotel because it offers an experience that feels different from an ordinary hotel.
Modern furniture and softer colors may improve the rooms, but Disney will need to preserve the playful atmosphere that makes the property special.
Guests planning visits during 2027 or 2028 should also watch for potential construction disruptions as work progresses.
Disney has not announced a specific room-rate increase tied to the project, and the proposed designs could change before completion.
For now, the refurbishment represents a major transformation for Art of Animation, and families who love its original rooms may want to enjoy them before the changes arrive.
