Disney and Universal Could Be About To See Attendance Drop During Busiest Season

Disney and Universal are the biggest names in the theme park industry, welcoming millions of visitors to their destinations around the world every year.

From Walt Disney World Resort in Florida to Universal Studios Hollywood in California, both companies have built enormous entertainment destinations that attract families, tourists, and fans throughout the year.

It's no surprise that November and December are particularly busy periods for their destinations, with Thanksgiving (in the US), Christmas, and New Year's celebrations bringing even more visitors through park gates.

Walt Disney World, for example, hosts Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party and the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays, while Universal Orlando welcomes guests with its annual Grinchmas festivities, Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and Universal's Holiday Parade featuring Macy's.

But an unexpected potential competitor could soon give some people a reason to reconsider how they spend their time and money. That's because one of the biggest entertainment releases in history is finally approaching, and its arrival could have implications for more than just the video game industry.

GTA VI Could Give Disney and Universal Unexpected Competition

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026, marking the first mainline entry in Rockstar Games' since Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018).

The anticipation surrounding the game has been enormous, with players waiting to explore the game's fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar's interpretation of Florida, and the return of Vice City. Watch the official launch trailer for the upcoming game below:

Its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto V (2013), became one of the best-selling video games of all time, and so expectations for its successor are understandably high.

With the latest installment finally arriving just ahead of Thanksgiving, it could become a major competitor for people's leisure time in the US during an especially busy period for the entertainment industry.

Of course, this isn't necessarily limited to the US. Disney and Universal operate theme parks across multiple countries, while GTA VI will be available to players internationally. Some people who might otherwise spend their disposable income on a theme park visit could instead choose to purchase the game and spend their free time exploring Leonida.

Will Disney and Universal Theme Park Attendance Take a Hit?

There's currently no evidence that either Disney or Universal is expecting an attendance decline because of GTA VI. Both companies also have plenty of attractions, seasonal entertainment, and holiday celebrations designed to encourage visitors throughout November and December.

Nevertheless, the timing of Rockstar's release is particularly interesting. With the game expected to command considerable attention, it remains to be seen whether some potential visitors will choose to stay home instead.

There's also the geographical connection between the game and Walt Disney World, with Leonida taking inspiration from the very state where Disney operates its largest theme park resort.

Whether GTA VI actually affects theme park attendance remains to be seen, but Disney and Universal could soon find themselves competing for people's attention in an unexpected way.
