Disney World Begins Reversing Months of Construction at Hollywood Studios

Construction has become a familiar sight across Walt Disney World Resort, but visitors to Disney's Hollywood Studios are finally seeing one major project move in the opposite direction.

For nearly three months, a recognizable section of the theme park has looked considerably different from what longtime guests are accustomed to seeing.

Disney removed a major feature from the area over the summer, leaving behind an unusual scene while crews worked on improvements.

Now, the company has started reversing those changes, bringing back a familiar part of the park's atmosphere.

The latest development also comes just days before Hollywood Studios begins welcoming visitors for its Christmas celebrations.

Disney World Begins Refilling Echo Lake

Disney's Hollywood Studios is home to several recognizable landmarks, but Echo Lake has remained an important part of the park's scenery for years.

Located near attractions and restaurants such as Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!, Hollywood & Vine, and 50's Prime Time Café, the waterfront area provides a distinctive setting within the busy theme park.

However, visitors arriving after mid-August encountered something unusual.

Disney had drained Echo Lake as part of a refurbishment project, exposing the lakebed and temporarily changing the appearance of the surrounding area.

The project continued throughout the following months as crews worked on maintaining and refreshing several features.

Now, the water is finally coming back.

WDW News Today reported that crews began refilling Echo Lake on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

Photographs from the area showed water returning, although the lake had not yet reached its usual level.

The development represents a major step forward for the project, even though Disney has not confirmed an exact completion date.

Several Hollywood Studios Features Receive Improvements

While Echo Lake's missing water was the most obvious change, Disney used the refurbishment to address several decorative elements.

Crews refreshed and repainted artificial tree stumps and logs positioned throughout the lake.

The S.S. Down the Hatch, the boat-shaped structure containing Dockside Diner, also received maintenance.

Another familiar feature getting attention was Gertie the Dinosaur.

The giant green dinosaur, home to Dinosaur Gertie's Ice Cream of Extinction, is a recognizable part of the Echo Lake area.

Unlike major attractions that draw long lines throughout the day, Gertie primarily serves as a themed landmark and ice cream location.

However, that doesn't make her any less important to the park's atmosphere.

For visitors who have been coming to Hollywood Studios for years, these smaller details help make the park feel familiar.

Refreshing them allows Disney to maintain the area's appearance without completely changing its identity.

Disney World Moves Toward Holiday Preparations

With the refurbishment nearing completion, Disney is also turning its attention toward the upcoming Christmas season.

Echo Lake traditionally receives elaborate holiday decorations, including a large Christmas tree displayed on the water.

That seasonal display is already taking shape.

According to WDW News Today, crews placed a metal bridge inside the lake to help prepare for the Christmas tree installation.

The work comes as Hollywood Studios prepares for Disney Jollywood Nights, its separately ticketed holiday event featuring seasonal entertainment and festive experiences.

Visitors can also expect the surrounding area to take on a more festive appearance as Christmas approaches.

One familiar holiday feature that had not yet returned as of November 3 was Gertie's seasonal makeover.

The dinosaur typically receives Christmas decorations, including a Santa hat, but those additions had not been installed when the latest refurbishment update was reported.

Disney has not confirmed when Gertie's decorations will return.

For now, the biggest news is that Echo Lake is finally getting its water back.

After months of maintenance, the iconic Hollywood Studios area is moving closer to its usual appearance, just in time for one of Disney World's busiest and most festive seasons.
