Walt Disney World guests returning to one of its most recognizable hotels may notice an unexpected empty spot during their next visit.
On September 23, crews arrived at Disney’s Pop Century Resort and removed a familiar piece that had become part of the hotel’s nostalgic scenery. Workers lifted it from its longtime home, hauled it away, and left temporary barriers behind.
The sudden removal raises a question: Is it coming back?
There appears to be a simple reason Disney may have needed to take the piece away. However, Disney hasn’t announced a return date or confirmed whether the removal is temporary.
Pop Century Has Always Celebrated the Past
Disney’s Pop Century Resort opened in December 2003 and was built around decades of American pop culture.
The Value Resort takes guests through the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Rather than filling those areas with small references, Disney made many of its icons enormous.
Giant yo-yos, bowling pins, Rubik’s Cubes, rollerblades, and other objects represent different decades throughout the property. Disney characters also appear around the resort.
Although Disney has modernized parts of Pop Century, those oversized icons and nostalgic details continue to define the hotel.
Transportation has also become a major benefit. The Disney Skyliner connects Pop Century with EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, giving guests an alternative to buses.
But smaller details scattered around the property have also become part of the Pop Century experience.
And one of those familiar sights just disappeared.
A Missing Piece of Nostalgia
The missing piece is Goofy’s red hot rod, which had long been displayed between Pop Century’s 1960s and 1970s sections.
On September 23, a video shared on social media captured crews lifting the vehicle before towing it away. The hot rod had sat near the courtyard and within walking distance of the Everything POP main building.
According to the social media account @DashDestinations, Disney removed the vehicle due to a damaged windshield.
If that report proves to be the full explanation, the hot rod could simply be getting repaired. Disney could fix or replace the windshield before returning the vehicle.
Disney, however, hasn’t publicly confirmed that plan.
Another video later showed temporary barriers surrounding the area. There is currently no announced return date, and Disney hasn’t said whether crews will reinstall it.
Goofy’s hot rod wasn’t a ride, restaurant, or major attraction. But details like this helped give the resort its personality.
For returning visitors accustomed to seeing the vehicle, its absence may be difficult to miss.

Pop Century Is Getting a Fresher Look
The removal also follows several updates around Pop Century, including a refresh of the resort’s guest rooms.
Disney maintained the rooms’ basic functionality while introducing additional color and decorative details.
Warm wood-toned flooring now features a geometric inset that creates the appearance of an area rug. Blue, gray, green, and orange add color, while soft blue shades appear around parts of the bed wall and bathroom.
Disney also refreshed the curtains and upholstery. Chairs feature retro-inspired patterns that include Hidden Mickey details.
Some familiar artwork remains. The pull-down bed continues to feature Pluto sleeping and dreaming about bones, while Mickey Mouse artwork carries the rooms’ colorful pop-art theme forward.
Changes have extended beyond the guest rooms. Disney refreshed the lobby with artwork inspired by different decades and the Fab Five. Everything POP Shopping & Dining and Petals Pool Bar have also received attention.
Together, those updates give portions of Pop Century a fresher appearance while keeping its nostalgic identity.
The Biggest Question Still Has No Answer
Now, attention turns back to Goofy’s missing hot rod.
The reported broken windshield offers a reasonable explanation for Disney's removal. The temporary barriers could also mean that additional work is needed before anything can return to the space.
Still, Disney hasn’t confirmed what comes next.
Pop Century will celebrate its 23rd anniversary in December 2026, putting the resort less than three months away from another milestone.
For now, guests can only wait to see whether Goofy’s hot rod makes its way back home.
If Disney repairs and returns the vehicle, this could amount to little more than a temporary absence. If it doesn’t come back, Pop Century will have lost one of the familiar nostalgic details longtime visitors have come to recognize.
Until Disney provides an update, that empty spot remains one more mystery at the resort.
