After 3 Years Abandoned, Disney World Confirms New Future for Star Wars Property

One of Walt Disney World’s most unusual abandoned properties finally has a future.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser permanently closed in September 2023, leaving behind a massive building created specifically for Disney’s ambitious two-night Star Wars experience. Nearly three years later, Disney is still working to transform the property, and a newly extended permit shows that process will continue into 2027.

Guests won't be checking into the Halcyon again, though. Disney has a completely different use in mind.

Disney Is Repurposing Galactic Starcruiser

Disney announced in January 2025 that the former Galactic Starcruiser building would become office space for Walt Disney Imagineering.

That conversion remains underway.

Disney recently extended a general construction permit for the property at 201 S Studio Dr. Balfour Beatty Construction LLC is listed as the contractor, and the permit now runs through August 25, 2027.

The extension gives Disney additional time to complete work at a building that was designed for a very specific purpose.

Disney's Facility Asset Management team filed the permit, pointing toward general construction and maintenance rather than a new themed experience. Imagineering has also filed separate paperwork connected to construction at an administration building beside the former hotel.

Disney is also removing theming from the Galactic Starcruiser as the property transitions into its new role.

A Short Life for Disney's Star Wars Experiment

Galactic Starcruiser opened on March 1, 2022, and attempted something Disney had never done on this scale.

Rather than operating like a normal hotel, the Halcyon placed guests inside an interactive Star Wars storyline featuring characters, entertainment and activities throughout their stay.

The experience earned praise for its ambitious entertainment, but its high price became a major point of criticism. Reports indicated the experience struggled with occupancy and never became profitable.

Disney permanently closed Galactic Starcruiser on September 30, 2023, less than two years after it opened.

A Second Life Away From Guests

Disney isn't bringing Galactic Starcruiser back, but the property won't remain empty.

Once the conversion is finished, Walt Disney Imagineering will use the former Star Wars experience as office space. That means a building once created to transport vacationers to a galaxy far, far away will instead support Disney's work behind the scenes.

The latest permit doesn't guarantee construction will continue all the way through August 2027. However, its extension gives Disney until then to complete the work.

After nearly three years without guests, Galactic Starcruiser finally has a clear second act — just not one the public will get to experience.
