Millions of Walt Disney World guests have made the familiar trip toward Magic Kingdom over the decades, and Disney is now preparing to change one part of that experience for the first time in 50 years.
The company is expanding its Magic Kingdom boat fleet with a fourth vessel, marking a surprisingly rare transportation milestone at the resort.
Before that new boat arrives, Disney has some work to do.
A recently filed permit reveals plans to modify a backstage marina used to store and service Disney's watercraft. The project will add new dock space and make several other physical changes as Disney gets ready for its newest vessel.
And unlike many of the construction projects happening around Magic Kingdom right now, guests probably won't see most of this work.
New Work Is Planned Near Bay Lake
Disney filed an application with the South Florida Water Management District for what it calls the NSA Dock Expansion.
The work is planned for the North Service Area Marina, which sits at the northern end of Bay Lake. Disney uses this backstage location to store and service its watercraft fleet.
The project will cover 0.89 acres east of Facilities Way.
According to the permit information, Disney plans to install new floating dock extensions and additions. Crews will also replace and relocate some existing pilings while adding eight new ones. Dredging work is included in the project plans as well.
Those changes are connected to something much bigger for Magic Kingdom transportation.
Disney Is Adding a Fourth Boat
The Meg Gilbert Crofton is coming to Walt Disney World.
Disney's newest boat is currently being built and is expected to make its debut in 2027. Once it arrives, it will become the fourth boat in the Magic Kingdom fleet.
It's the history behind that addition that makes the announcement particularly notable.
The Meg Gilbert Crofton will be the first new boat added to the fleet in 50 years.
Magic Kingdom itself has changed tremendously during that time. Attractions have opened and closed, lands have evolved, and Walt Disney World has grown into a much larger destination.
Yet some of the transportation infrastructure responsible for moving guests around the resort has remained familiar for decades.
That's about to change.
Transportation Is Part of a Much Bigger Magic Kingdom Transformation
Disney's investment comes at an interesting moment for Magic Kingdom.
The park is already preparing for major additions in the years ahead, including Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land.
The source report suggests the fourth boat could potentially help Disney prepare for higher attendance as those expansions arrive. Disney, however, has not officially stated that the new vessel is being added specifically because of expected attendance increases.
What we do know is that the Meg Gilbert Crofton is expected to arrive first.
That gives Disney time to expand its boat fleet and supporting infrastructure before those larger park projects are completed.
It's easy to overlook transportation projects when new rides and themed lands are taking shape nearby. But adding capacity behind the scenes can be just as important when Disney is preparing a park for its next several decades.
Guests Will See the Result in 2027
Most guests won't watch the North Service Area Marina transform.
Because the facility is backstage, the dock extensions, new pilings, and other construction should remain largely out of sight.
The result won't be nearly as hidden.
When the Meg Gilbert Crofton enters service in 2027, guests will see a transportation fleet that has officially expanded after five decades without a new boat.
Magic Kingdom has plenty of bigger changes on the horizon, but this one carries a history all its own.
