Disney Reveals New Look for Main Street, U.S.A., Effective May 19

Disneyland Park’s most iconic thoroughfare woke up looking decidedly more patriotic on May 19. Here’s what Disneyland Resort recently changed on Main Street, U.S.A.

WDWNT reported that Americana-themed decorations arrived along Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Park on May 19, kicking off what is typically the most festive stretch of the year at the original Disney park. Memorial Day is just days away, and with the United States’ 250th anniversary on the horizon this July, Disneyland Resort didn’t miss the chance to decorate.

The lampposts running the length of Main Street, U.S.A., are now dressed in sweeping banners, each featuring a blue upper section with a ring of small stars encircling a single large star, flowing into red and white stripes below. Small American flags, the kind you’d expect to see waved at a Fourth of July parade, hang just beneath the streetlights above each banner.

Bunting has been strung across the facades of several of Main Street, U.S.A.’s most iconic buildings. City Hall, the Emporium, the Main Street Ice Cream Parlor, the Carnation Café, and other structures along the street are now adorned with red, white, and blue fabric draped from artificial balconies, rooflines, and architectural accents throughout the area.

The patriotic makeover isn’t wall-to-wall, and ongoing construction explains why. The Coca-Cola Refreshment Corner, Penny Arcade, Candy Palace, and sections of Carnation Café are currently wrapped in scaffolding and decorative scrim, putting their facades out of reach for decorators this season. The businesses inside each of those locations remain open and operating normally despite the exterior work surrounding them.

The recent Main Street, U.S.A., refresh is one early piece of what’s shaping up to be an extra patriotic summer across the United States Disney parks. Soarin’ Over America — a specially updated overlay of the beloved flight simulator — is set to debut at Walt Disney World Resort on May 26, with Disneyland Resort following on July 2, timed to the Independence Day holiday and the country’s semiquincentennial celebration.
