Another Iconic Universal Spot Set To Close in Ongoing Reshuffle

Theme parks frequently reinvent themselves to stay fresh, and Universal Studios Japan is no exception.

Since opening in 2001, the park has grown from a modest movie-themed attraction into a cutting-edge entertainment destination. Recent years have seen major expansions, including the wildly popular SUPER NINTENDO WORLD expansion, Donkey Kong Country, which pushes immersive, next-generation experiences.

With such constant evolution, it’s no surprise that some beloved staples must give way to new ideas. Universal Studios Japan confirmed another permanent closure, signaling a shift in the park’s New York-themed area.

The restaurant, inspired by its Orlando counterpart, offers guests an Irish pub atmosphere nestled in the New York section of the park. Its menu features classic Western dishes such as steak, beef stew, and salads, making it a popular stop for visitors seeking hearty meals.

Finnegan’s closure marks the latest departure from Universal’s New York area, which has been steadily changing. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, a long-running attraction beloved by many, permanently closed in January 2024 after the expiry of the park’s licensing agreement.

Earlier, in 2020, the T2-3D: Battle Across Time show was retired and replaced by the Detective Conan 4-D Live Show: Jewel Under the Starry Sky, showcasing the park’s focus on refreshing its lineup.

What’s Next for Universal Studios Japan?

Universal Studios Japan’s New York area has been at the center of speculation and rumor about upcoming developments. Fans have been eagerly anticipating new attractions that could leverage Universal’s partnerships with major franchises.

One popular theory suggests the Pokémon brand may finally receive a dedicated attraction, which would be a significant move given Universal’s ongoing collaboration with The Pokémon Company. While character appearances have been frequent, no full-scale ride or land has yet emerged from this partnership.

The upcoming addition of Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast—currently exclusive to Universal Studios Florida—also signals the park’s intent to keep expanding its appeal with fresh, recognizable properties.

As Universal Studios Japan balances nostalgia and innovation, closures like Finnegan’s Bar & Grill remind fans that change is constant in the theme park world. Guests can expect more surprises as the park continues its evolution.
