‘Ant-Man 3’ Star Officially Returns to MCU in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Marvel Studios appears to be quietly reshaping one of its most familiar corners, and the Ant-Man franchise is at the center of the shift. While nothing has been officially framed as a farewell, a combination of reported exits, casting uncertainty, and major narrative pivots suggests that the MCU is moving into a noticeably different phase.

One of the more surprising developments comes from industry insider Daniel Richtman, who claims that Michael Peña’s fan-favorite character Luis may be done with the MCU.

Richtman stated that Peña is “never coming back,” adding that he is “not sure what happened” behind the scenes. Marvel Studios has not confirmed any of this, but the report has already sparked discussion, given how central Luis was to the early success of the Ant-Man films.

First introduced in Ant-Man (2015), Luis quickly became a breakout character thanks to his comedic rhythm and uniquely structured storytelling sequences. He returned for Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), but was absent from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), which marked the beginning of speculation about his status.

Director Peyton Reed previously addressed the absence, explaining that the Quantum Realm narrative simply did not accommodate the character and that no version of the script included him. That explanation once suggested a creative limitation, but in hindsight it now reads as a possible early sign of a longer-term departure.

Michael Douglas, who has portrayed Hank Pym since the beginning of the Ant-Man series, has openly discussed reducing his acting workload, raising doubts about future appearances. Meanwhile, Evangeline Lilly has indicated she is stepping away from acting for an extended period, putting her role as Hope van Dyne/The Wasp in question as well.

Together, these shifts suggest that the original Ant-Man ensemble—once a stable part of the MCU—may be quietly dispersing. Marvel’s broader storytelling plans have also been forced into recalibration following the departure of Jonathan Majors, who had been set up as Kang the Conqueror, the central antagonist of the Multiverse Saga.

After legal controversies involving Majors, Marvel Studios ended its collaboration with the actor. Kang, introduced in Loki and expanded in Quantumania, was originally positioned as the saga’s overarching threat across multiple Avengers projects.

With that storyline no longer intact, Marvel has reportedly begun reworking its long-term direction, reshaping planned crossover events and reconsidering how its next major conflict will unfold. While some characters appear to be exiting or pausing their involvement, others are stepping forward into larger roles.

Kathryn Newton, who plays Cassie Lang, is set to return in Avengers: Doomsday (2026). Her involvement became visible through social media posts showing her receiving a miniature production chair, echoing earlier MCU casting reveals.

Newton took over the role of Cassie in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, following earlier portrayals by Abby Ryder Fortson and Emma Fuhrmann.

Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be a major inflection point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even as official details remain tightly under wraps. The film is expected to bring together characters across multiple timelines, with Multiverse instability—potentially including incursions and collapsing realities—serving as a major narrative driver.

Following the removal of Kang as the saga’s central antagonist, Marvel is instead positioning Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom, a move that significantly alters the trajectory of the franchise’s overarching conflict and resets expectations for its next phase.

Cassie Lang’s expanding role reflects Marvel’s broader strategy of elevating younger characters into more prominent positions. After her increased involvement in Quantumania, her confirmed presence in Avengers: Doomsday has led to speculation that she could become part of a larger next-generation superhero team within the MCU.

Viewed together, these developments point to a franchise in active reconfiguration rather than simple continuity. With Michael Peña potentially exiting, Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly stepping back, and Jonathan Majors no longer part of Marvel’s plans, the Ant-Man corner of the MCU is undergoing a noticeable reshaping.

At the same time, Kathryn Newton’s growing importance within the Avengers storyline signals where the franchise is headed next: toward a new ensemble structure built around emerging characters and a redefined central threat. Marvel Studios is not abandoning its past, but it is clearly reorganizing it for what comes next.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
