One of the more revealing details about Marvel’s next ensemble film just popped up in an interview with Ian McKellan.
The veteran cast member appeared to reference a major set piece from production, then immediately walked the comment back.

Marvel projects are typically guarded closely. Cast members often joke about strict nondisclosure agreements, and interviews are tightly managed. That context made the remark stand out.
The studio has not commented.
Marvel Rebuilds Its Next Phase
Marvel Studios is preparing a significant reset with Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.
The film marks the return of Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, who last directed Avengers: Endgame for the MCU. Their hiring signaled a shift back toward large-scale crossover storytelling.

Earlier plans centered on Kang were scrapped after legal issues involving Jonathan Majors. The studio pivoted to Doctor Doom as the primary antagonist.
Doctor Doom will be played by Robert Downey Jr., a notable departure after more than a decade as Tony Stark. The casting was revealed during a widely viewed livestream introducing the ensemble.
The confirmed lineup includes Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Tom Hiddleston, and Chris Hemsworth, among others.

Marvel is also incorporating characters from the former 20th Century Fox X-Men franchise. Several actors from that series are returning, reinforcing the studio’s multiverse strategy.
An Offhand Comment Draws Attention
During an interview with Jake Hamilton on his YouTube channel Jake's Takes, Ian McKellen discussed filming.
He said he “destroyed New Jersey the other day,” then quickly added, “I perhaps shouldn’t have said that.”
The remark appeared accidental. Hamilton moved on without asking follow-up questions.
McKellen is reprising Magneto for the first time since X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). His return is part of Marvel’s broader effort to fold legacy X-Men characters into the current cinematic universe.
Online, the comment prompted speculation about the setting of a large action sequence.
New Jersey has already appeared in recent Marvel projects. Ms. Marvel is set there, and WandaVision took place in the fictional town of Westview. Both locations connect to mutant storylines in the comics.

Marvel has not confirmed whether McKellen’s line reflects a specific plot point or was simply shorthand for a special-effects-heavy shoot.
