Marvel Studios is setting up a late-2026 event film that could dramatically reorganize the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the franchise moves into its next long-form storyline, Avengers: Doomsday is taking shape as a crossover built on legacy characters, Multiverse collisions, and a surprising villain at the center.
Avengers: Doomsday is slated for release on December 18, 2026, and reunites Marvel with directors Anthony and Joe Russo for the first time since Avengers: Endgame (2019). The studio has moved away from its previous Kang-focused roadmap, rebuilding the arc around Doctor Doom instead.

In a headline-grabbing shift, Robert Downey Jr. returns to Marvel not as Tony Stark, but as Victor Von Doom, placing the former franchise hero in the role of the saga’s chief antagonist.
Marvel revealed much of the ensemble through a high-profile 2025 “chair reveal” livestream that rolled out cast names one by one. Confirmed players include Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), and James Marsden (Cyclops).
The studio also confirmed participation from multiple Fox-era X-Men actors, including Ian McKellen (Magneto), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), and Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), further blending Marvel’s film timelines into a shared narrative.

Some veteran MCU names were missing. Mark Ruffalo addressed fan questions directly with humor during a late-night TV stop.
Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Ruffalo said, “They decided that it was better to get rid of me than for me to tell the end of the next movie.”
Ruffalo has said he is not appearing in Doomsday despite rumors of a firing, though he is set for Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, 2026. Industry observers have suggested Kevin Feige’s production focus has leaned more toward Doomsday than Spider-Man 4.

Also absent from the initial lineup were Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers/Captain America, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Evans later surfaced in Doomsday teaser spots attached to Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), alongside footage centered on Thor, the X-Men, and Wakandans encountering Ben Grimm/Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach).
Online reports have pointed to an opening sequence built around a cross-universe confrontation. According to scooper MyTimeToShineHello and coverage from Comic Book Movie, the film may begin with a clash involving a familiar Spider-Man.
“Apparently, the movie will open with Maguire's web-slinger battling the X-Men, ‘and particularly Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine,'” Comic Book Movie writes. “This somewhat corroborates claims we've heard about an Incursion destroying Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Universe, and it gives Maguire's Peter Parker a lot to fight for in this movie and Avengers: Secret Wars as he looks to bring back his loved ones.”

The same source made large claims about the production’s scope.
“Avengers: Doomsday is not only the most epic Avengers movie, but it might be the most epic movie OF ALL TIME,” they wrote (via Comic Book Movie). “The opening scene alone tops any previous Avengers movie, and the final battle is just INSANE.”
Marvel and Disney have not validated these details. For now, they remain unconfirmed, though the project’s December launch window has already prompted strong performance forecasts. Further claims outline Doom approaching the Fantastic Four as a collaborator against reality-ending Incursions, before revealing deeper motives.

“Victor asks the Fantastic Four for help with the Incursions. They travel together with Steve Rogers to the MCU in their ship to warn everyone, then join forces to head to the X-Men universe–the source of the next Incursion that will destroy their Earths,” MyTimeToShineHello writes, via Comic Book Movie. “They have a plan to fix everything.”
The outlet expanded, writing, “The scooper adds that the movie will see Steve Rogers and Thor teaming up to seek out Loki, presumably meaning they'll need to find him and the TVA as part of their likely doomed (pun intended) plan to save the Multiverse.”

Marvel has supplemented the heavy stakes with lighter world-building. An animated segment from Marvel Super Heroes: What The–?! presents a comedic tour of Latveria, where Doom showcases Doomstadt landmarks, a park called “Doomland,” “time-loop vacations,” and Doombots acting as guides.
How directly that short connects to Doomsday is unclear, but the early focus on Doom’s homeland points to a coordinated franchise setup ahead of release.
Additional fan discussion grew after artwork shown at the Walt Disney Studios Marketing Expo in Shanghai featured Doom’s armor with two cloak symbols resembling Captain Marvel’s star and Thor’s hammer. Viewers have speculated these could hint at alternate-universe victories rather than simple design flourishes.

Marvel’s transition phase is already visible at the box office. The Fantastic Four: First Steps outperformed Captain America: Brave New World (2025) and Thunderbolts* (2025), and leadership has repeatedly cited Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) as the films meant to set the franchise’s next direction and increase the X-Men’s prominence.
With Downey Jr. stepping back into Marvel under a new mask and multiple generations of characters converging, Avengers: Doomsday is being framed as a key inflection point for the MCU.
