His family confirmed the news in a statement released on Monday, July 13, revealing that Neill passed away in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by loved ones.

They described the loss as “sudden and unexpected” and confirmed that the actor remained cancer-free at the time of his death after a years-long battle with a rare form of blood cancer.

For an entire generation of moviegoers, Neill will forever be synonymous with Jurassic Park (1993), Steven Spielberg's groundbreaking adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel that changed blockbuster filmmaking forever.

Sam Neill's Jurassic Park Legacy

As paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant, Neill brought intelligence, humor, skepticism, and warmth to one of cinema's most iconic heroes. His journey from someone uncomfortable around children to reluctant father figure to Tim (Joe Mazzello) and Lex Murphy (Ariana Richards) became one of the emotional anchors of the film.

He returned to the role in Jurassic Park III (2001), before making an emotional comeback alongside Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic World Dominion (2022), reuniting the original trio nearly thirty years after audiences first stepped through the gates of Isla Nublar.

For many fans, seeing Grant, Ellie Sattler, and Ian Malcolm together again represented the true heart of the Jurassic franchise.

Outside the world of dinosaurs, Neill built one of the most diverse careers in modern cinema.

His film credits included Sleeping Dogs (1977), My Brilliant Career (1979), Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981), Dead Calm (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), The Piano (1993), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), Event Horizon (1997), and The Hunter (2011). On television, he appeared in productions such as The Tudors (2007) and Peaky Blinders (2013–2014).

Throughout his career, Neill earned numerous honors and accolades, including several Golden Globe and Emmy nominations, while becoming one of New Zealand's most celebrated actors.

For Jurassic fans especially, however, he was always Dr. Alan Grant.
