Disneyland Resort‘s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is closing indefinitely beginning next month.

History of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad opened its doors at Disneyland Resort in 1979, captivating guests with its Western design and thrilling ride experience. This iconic attraction quickly became known for its adventurous theme rooted in the Wild West. Within a year, Walt Disney World Resort’s Magic Kingdom Park introduced its own version, effectively establishing the mine train coaster as a signature offering across multiple Disney parks globally, including Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris.

Over the years, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has undergone various enhancements and refurbishments to keep the experience fresh and exciting. Technology improvements and new safety features have been integrated while preserving the attraction’s original charm.

The Frontierland roller coaster went viral earlier this year when an anonymous guest left a vintage photograph of a mother and child on the ride. Social media users wondered whether the old picture was left behind accidentally or as a memorial to a lost loved one.

Disneyland Resort has recently announced plans to close Big Thunder Mountain Railroad for indefinite refurbishment starting November 18, 2024. According to the Southern California Disney park’s website, the attraction will be shuttered until at least November 21, 2024. Precise timelines beyond this date remain uncertain due to the Disney park’s practice of releasing its calendar only 43 days in advance.

Walt Disney Imagineering hasn’t announced plans to change the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness during the refurbishment. Given the high traffic volume the ride sees daily, normal wear and tear can accumulate, necessitating thorough inspections to ensure guest safety and ride reliability. Regular maintenance is crucial for the proper functioning of its attractions, which endure intensive use throughout the year.
