For over two decades, Buffy the Vampire Slayer has remained one of television’s most beloved cult classics. Now, after years of speculation, the franchise is officially coming back. Hulu is reportedly close to ordering a pilot for a brand-new series, with Sarah Michelle Gellar involved as both an executive producer and returning cast member.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Gellar reflected on the three-year journey to bring the Slayer back, crediting Nomadland director Chloé Zhao for igniting the idea during a “twenty-minute coffee” that turned into a four-hour discussion. “I feel so lucky to be on this journey with these four unbelievably talented women, all of whom love Buffy as much as I do. And as much as you do,” she shared with fans.
But what about the rest of the original cast?

David Boreanaz, who played Buffy’s first love and longtime Angel lead, offered his support but didn’t confirm whether he’d be involved. “Excited for you and your journey,” he commented on Gellar’s post, encouraging her to “always give back to the fans.”
Juliet Landau, who portrayed the sadistic vampire Drusilla, has made it clear she’d love to return. Speaking with RadioTimes.com, she enthusiastically responded, “My gosh, yes. It would be so much fun to play, absolutely.” She added that a mix of original actors and fresh faces would be crucial to making the new series work.

Interestingly, the Buffy universe has already explored new storytelling avenues in “Slayers: A Buffyverse Story”, an Audible drama featuring returning stars James Marsters (Spike), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), and Anthony Head (Giles). Could this be a sign that at least some of them would be open to appearing in the reboot?
Despite the excitement, one key figure who won’t be involved is Buffy creator Joss Whedon. While his presence loomed large over the original show, his absence from this revival marks a new chapter—one that appears to be driven by Gellar and a fresh creative team.
For now, fans can only speculate on what’s next. Will the Buffy revival pick up after Season 7? Will it introduce an entirely new Slayer? And most importantly—who else might be joining Gellar on this return to Sunnydale?
