Sarah Michelle Gellar Weighs in on Returning for Long-Awaited ‘Buffy’ Revival

In the ’90s, a television phenomenon emerged that would redefine pop culture. While shows like Friends dominated mainstream conversations, it was Buffy the Vampire Slayer that captivated audiences with its unique blend of comedy, action, and supernatural drama. Created by Joss Whedon, Buffy is now celebrated as one of the greatest TV shows of all time.

Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, the series followed the titular character as she battled vampires, demons, and even gods, all while navigating the challenges of adolescence. Gellar’s portrayal catapulted her to stardom, making her an icon of the era. Alongside characters like Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon), Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan), and Angel (David Boreanaz), Buffy the Vampire Slayer offered audiences a world rich with storytelling and character development.

While the series wrapped its seven-season run in 2003, its impact lives on. Spinoffs like Angel, graphic novels, and video games have kept the Buffyverse alive for fans. But the question remains—could a revival bring the magic back?

Sarah Michelle Gellar, now 47, recently expressed a softened stance on returning to her iconic role. Speaking on The Drew Barrymore Show, she shared, “I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect. But watching [And Just Like That] and seeing [Dexter: Original Sin], and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”

The idea of a Buffy reboot has gained traction over the years. Dolly Parton, an uncredited producer on the original series, told Business Insider earlier this year, “They’re still working on that [a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot]. They’re thinking about bringing it back and revamping it.” However, concrete details remain elusive.

Should a revival materialize, it raises the question of who should carry the torch. Gellar herself once remarked to SFX Magazine: “I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power.”

Whether with Gellar or a new Slayer at the helm, one thing is certain—Buffy the Vampire Slayer is unlikely to remain buried for long.
