Confirmed: Disney Overhauls Bay Lake Shoreline with Launch of 967-Room Lakeshore Lodge

One of the most overlooked sections of Walt Disney World is about to undergo one of its biggest transformations in decades.

Disney has officially confirmed new details about Disney Lakeshore Lodge, a massive 967-room resort that will reshape a significant portion of the Bay Lake shoreline when it opens in summer 2027.

The project represents far more than just another hotel addition. It marks the complete redevelopment of land that has remained largely dormant for years and introduces an entirely new vision for Disney's waterfront resort district.

Disney's Newest Resort Takes Shape

Disney Lakeshore Lodge will sit along Bay Lake near Disney's Wilderness Lodge and Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.

The company describes the project as a nature-inspired resort celebrating the beauty of the outdoors through Disney storytelling. Design influences will come from films such as Bambi (1942), Pocahontas (1995), and Brother Bear (2003).

The resort will feature 967 accommodations, including traditional guest rooms, studios, suites, and newly introduced waterfront Lake Houses.

Many rooms will overlook Bay Lake, while select accommodations will also offer views of Magic Kingdom fireworks.

Floor-to-ceiling windows and natural design elements are intended to blur the line between indoor and outdoor spaces throughout the property.

A Massive Recreation Complex Is Coming

Perhaps the biggest reveal involves the resort's recreation offerings.

Disney recently unveiled plans for an expansive outdoor area called The Wetlands.

Designed as both a relaxation space and family activity zone, The Wetlands will include multiple pools, interactive play environments, a lazy river, nature trails, and waterfront gathering spaces.

At its center will be Lakeside Lagoon, a large zero-entry pool featuring a spiral waterslide.

Guests seeking a more relaxed experience will be able to float through Daydream River, a lazy river winding through the recreation area.

Meanwhile, Perspective Pond will offer a quieter leisure pool and spa area positioned for views toward Magic Kingdom.

Pocahontas Plays a Major Role

One surprising aspect of the project is Disney's decision to feature Pocahontas (1995) prominently within The Wetlands.

The company says children's play areas will draw inspiration from “Colors of the Wind” and the film's connection to nature.

Heron Shores will feature climbing and exploration experiences, while Otter Springs will provide interactive water play areas.

Rather than focusing on character meet-and-greets or themed attractions, Disney appears to be using the movie's environmental themes to shape the overall recreation experience.

The approach aligns with the resort's broader emphasis on nature and outdoor exploration.

Replacing a Historic Disney Location

For longtime Walt Disney World fans, the project carries additional significance.

The Bay Lake shoreline being redeveloped was once home to River Country, Disney's first water park.

Although River Country permanently closed years ago, the area remained one of the resort's most recognizable undeveloped spaces.

Disney Lakeshore Lodge effectively closes that chapter while introducing a completely new destination designed for future generations of visitors.

Disney has even hinted that a special plaque honoring a beloved attraction that once occupied the site will be included somewhere within The Wetlands.

What This Means for Walt Disney World

The opening of Disney Lakeshore Lodge will add nearly 1,000 new accommodations to Walt Disney World's hotel inventory at a time when demand for Deluxe Resort rooms remains strong.

The project also strengthens Disney's Bay Lake resort corridor, creating another premium lodging option within boat distance of Magic Kingdom.

Combined with its extensive recreation offerings, waterfront setting, and nature-focused storytelling, Lakeshore Lodge appears positioned to become one of Disney World's most distinctive resorts.

Construction continues, and Disney plans to share additional details about dining, amenities, and guest experiences in the coming months.

For now, one thing is clear: the shoreline of Bay Lake is changing dramatically, and Disney Lakeshore Lodge is set to become one of the resort's biggest additions of the decade.
