Brad Bird has spoken, and somewhere out there, thousands of fan theory threads just burst into flames.
The creator of The Incredibles is making it crystal clear that the franchise's third installment will not, repeat, will not be aging up Violet, Dash, or baby Jack-Jack. And sources close to the production… just kidding, this came straight from the man himself in an interview with The Direct. No anonymous insiders needed on this one.
The Man Behind the Masks Isn't Budging
Here's the situation. Bird wrote and directed the first two Incredibles movies, and he's back to write and executive-produce the third. Directing duties are going to Peter Sohn, the guy behind Elemental. So while there's a new captain steering the ship, Bird is still the one drawing the map.
And according to Bird, the map does not include a time jump. Period.
The 2004 original and the 2018 sequel are set back-to-back, and every indication is that the third film will keep that streak alive. By the time Incredibles 3 hits theaters on June 16, 2028, a full 24 years will have passed in our world. On screen? The Parrs will have barely finished dinner.
Why Bird Refuses to Let the Kids Grow Up
This is where it gets interesting. Bird isn't keeping the characters young out of stubbornness or nostalgia. He's got a whole philosophy behind it, and he laid it all out.
In his telling, each member of the Parr family is a walking, talking stage of life. Jack-Jack, the baby with a grab bag of unpredictable powers, represents pure potential. Nobody knows what a baby will turn into, and that mystery is exactly why the little guy can do seemingly anything.
Dash is the embodiment of every sugar-fueled 10-year-old on the planet, all speed and chaos and zero patience. Violet, the teenager who can vanish and throw up force fields, is teenage insecurity made visible. Or invisible, as it were.
Even mom and dad fit the formula. Helen's stretching powers mirror the way mothers get pulled in a dozen directions at once. Bob's brute strength reflects the pressure on dads to be the unbreakable one.
Bird's bottom line: these are archetypes, and aging the kids up would wreck the entire foundation. He also had words for fans convinced that older characters would be hipper or more relatable, flatly saying it won't work that way. Translation: the man has heard your pitches, and the answer is no.
So What Is the New Incredibles Movie Actually About?
That's the million-dollar question, and right now, Pixar is giving up nothing. No plot. No villain. No returning voice cast confirmations. The studio is keeping this one locked in the vault.
But don't expect the silence to last. D23 is looming, and Pixar has a long history of using that stage to drop its biggest bombshells. With Incredibles 3 sitting as one of the studio's most anticipated titles in years, it would be a shock if the film didn't get major stage time.
