Confirmed: Operational Changes, Including Entire Park Closure, at Magic Kingdom

As October approaches, guests visiting Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort will notice some major updates—from evolving lands to adjusted park hours. These changes mark an important step forward for the park’s future while bidding farewell to several classic experiences.

The most visible change is unfolding in Frontierland, where construction is underway on Piston Peak National Park. This new area draws inspiration from Pixar’s Cars universe and brings with it a design philosophy Disney calls “Parkitecture,” mixing natural beauty with rustic craftsmanship. Guests will soon discover ranger stations, wooded trails, and a mountain lodge that blend the Cars world’s mechanical flair with the atmosphere of a national park.

Two new attractions headline the expansion: one is a fast-paced adventure through rugged terrain, while the other invites families with young children to explore together. The landscape features erupting geysers, rock formations, and thick tree lines to create a seamless visual transition between neighboring areas like Liberty Square and Grizzly Hall.

This large-scale reimagining began shortly after July 7, 2025, when Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America permanently closed. The beloved Liberty Belle Riverboat was also retired, marking the end of an era that stretched back to Magic Kingdom’s opening day in 1971. Tom Sawyer Island, which opened in May 1973, offered a hands-on exploration of the frontier for more than five decades.

While fans have expressed both enthusiasm and nostalgia, Josh D’Amaro and Disney’s leadership have reaffirmed that the redesign continues the park’s legacy of adventure, introducing new storytelling that stays true to Frontierland’s spirit. Alongside Piston Peak, Disney has confirmed a Villains Land expansion beyond Big Thunder Mountain, together representing the largest coordinated transformation in Magic Kingdom’s history and introducing at least four entirely new attractions.

As these changes take shape, guests planning visits this October will also see adjustments to Magic Kingdom’s operating hours. On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the park will close early at 6:00 p.m. for a private event related to the Gartner IT Symposium/Expo, taking place from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Throughout the fall, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party will continue to prompt earlier evening closures on select nights in August, September, and October. However, the month also brings extended hours for several dates. From October 13–18, the park will open at 8:00 a.m. with Early Entry beginning at 7:30 a.m. On October 15 and October 18, Magic Kingdom will remain open until 11:00 p.m.

Later in the month, on October 19, 24, and 25, the same early opening applies, and on October 25, guests can stay an extra hour—until 11:00 p.m. Whether exploring earlier in the morning or staying late into the evening, guests this October will experience a Magic Kingdom in transformation.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
