Last fall, when Walt Disney Studios announced that it was shaking up its 2024 film lineup, it seemed like a good idea. Disney CEO Bob Iger wanted fewer films but better quality films. This delay would, hopefully, allow Disney to avoid another disastrous year like it had in 2023.

After the announcement, there were only three Disney, Pixar, and Marvel films on the slate for 2024: Inside Out 2, Deadpool 3, and the live-action Lion King prequel, Musfasa: The Lion King.
Now, only a month into the new year, Disney is once again shuffling its 2024 film lineup, and again, we have more questions than answers.
Walt Disney Studios announced it will release Young Woman and the Sea (2024) on May 31. The Joachim Ronning film stars Star Wars alumni and future Daisy Ridley and was only supposed to be released on Disney Plus, but it will now get a full theatrical release.

Disney fans will remember Ronning from Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017).
In another surprise move, Walt Disney Studios announced it would release two untitled new movies. Disney will release an untitled Disney on September 6 and an untitled Disney Animation Studios film on November 27, just in time for Thanksgiving.
But beyond adding those two movies to the release calendar, Disney did not offer further details. So, fans are left wondering precisely what Disney plans on putting into those two release windows. And if Bob Iger planned to release fewer movies of better quality, it would seem that rushing two films into the 2024 release schedule is counterintuitive to that plan.

Disney also has four movies from 20th Century Studios that will be released in 2024, which offer more questions. On August 16, 20th Century Studios is set to release an “untitled Alien movie.” With seven months left, at least the studio could develop a title.
Disney is hoping to avoid the disastrous box office that consumed 2023. Films from Marvel Studios that are usually guaranteed hits bombed at the box office, with The Marvels (2023) having the lowest take home in the history of the partnership between Marvel Studios and Disney.

Walt Disney Animation Studios also bombed with Wish (2023), while Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) and The Haunted Mansion (2023) each lost more than $100 million at the box office.
But Disney is off to a good start in 2024, with Percy Jackson becoming a hit on Disney Plus and high hopes for the lone Marvel movie this year, Deadpool 3.
For his sake, Bob Iger better hope his plan works, or Nelson Peltz won’t be the only investor calling for changes.
