Mom Complains After Disney Character Shoos Away Her Child

A recent incident at Disneyland Resort sparked a heated debate online after a mother claimed that her child was unfairly treated by a Disney character. The controversy began when the mother posted a TikTok video showing Goofy shooing away her child, who had chased him down in Mickey’s Toontown.

The TikTok user behind the video, @itsjazz10j, was upset by the encounter, tagging Disneyland Resort and writing, “Do better.” In the clip, her son is seen running after Goofy, who was holding hands with another toddler, leading him around the park. Goofy tries to maintain the interaction with the child he is already with, but the situation quickly escalates when the boy grabs Goofy’s nose. The character’s handler was a split second away from intervening, but Goofy had already pulled away and shook his finger at the boy.

“Watch how rude Goofy is to my son all because he touched his nose,” she said in her post. “…Goofy are you having a bad day?? wtf!!!!”

The post generated significant backlash, with many questioning whether the mother was justified in her response. However, the TikToker quickly turned off commenting.

Disney character performers face unique challenges, especially those in “fur” costumes like Goofy. Unlike “face” characters who can speak and engage with guests, fur characters like Goofy are limited to silent expressions and physical gestures. They rely on their character attendants for guidance and safety, and any unexpected behavior from guests, such as the incident in the video, can be dangerous for both the performer and the child.

Though the boy may not have had harmful intentions, grabbing a character’s head can pose a serious risk. Character costumes can be heavy, and sudden movements could result in injuries to both the performer and the guest. Goofy’s swift retreat from the situation highlights the importance of proper character interaction etiquette, which encourages guests to wait for the characters to acknowledge them first. When Disney Park guests and characters can see each other clearly, safer and more magical encounters are guaranteed.
