One of EPCOT's most interesting shopping experiences is about to disappear, and Disney World guests have only a short window left to see it.
The Mexico Pavilion remains one of World Showcase's most recognizable destinations. From its towering pyramid exterior to the indoor marketplace atmosphere waiting inside, the pavilion offers much more than a quick stop for food or an attraction.
Shopping has always been part of that experience, too.
Soon, however, one of those shopping locations will permanently close.
The Oaxacan Wood Carvings shop is nearing its final day, and Disney hasn't announced what will happen to the space afterward.
Guests Have Just Days Left
The permanent closure arrives September 1, giving late-August EPCOT visitors one last opportunity to check out the store.
Disney is also clearing out the remaining merchandise. Everything inside is currently discounted by 50%, giving guests another reason to visit before the location closes.
What happens after that remains unclear.
There is no announced replacement for the shop, and a specific reason for the closure hasn't been confirmed.
That uncertainty makes the change particularly interesting.
Disney could eventually introduce another retail concept, but until the company makes an announcement, guests shouldn't count on anything replacing the shop immediately.
This Shop Offered Something Unusual
Anyone who spends enough time shopping around Walt Disney World knows how easy it can be to encounter similar merchandise from one location to another.
The Oaxacan Wood Carvings shop was different.
Its handmade figures come from Copal wood harvested from the Oaxacan Valley in southern Mexico. Local artists carve the figures, sand them, and carefully paint the finished pieces. The designs can feature combinations of real and mythical creatures.
Those details made the merchandise feel connected to the Mexico Pavilion itself rather than simply to Disney World.
That's an important distinction at EPCOT.
World Showcase gives Disney an opportunity to offer shopping, dining, entertainment, and architectural details tied to the countries represented around the lagoon. A store filled with distinctive handcrafted items fits naturally into that concept.
The closure doesn't eliminate that idea from Mexico entirely. Guests will still find other shops and souvenirs inside the pavilion after the Oaxacan Wood Carvings store disappears.
Still, one particularly distinctive option is leaving.
Another Change for EPCOT
EPCOT has become a park where guests have learned to expect change.
Some updates completely transform major areas. Others happen on a much smaller scale and can easily fly under the radar unless guests know where to look.
This closure falls into that second category.
It isn't a major attraction disappearing, and it won't prevent anyone from visiting or enjoying the Mexico Pavilion. But longtime EPCOT visitors may notice its absence, especially those who enjoyed browsing World Showcase for souvenirs beyond standard Disney merchandise.
There is at least a little time remaining.
Guests visiting before the closure can stop by the shop, see the carvings one final time, and take advantage of the current 50% discount.
After September 1, however, that opportunity will be gone.
Until Disney reveals what comes next, the Mexico Pavilion will simply have one fewer shopping experience — and EPCOT will have lost another small piece of its World Showcase lineup.
