The Hobbit and Being Human star Aidan Turner achieved international fame when he starred as the swoon-worthy Ross Poldark on Poldark, but the actor has just traded his tricorn hat for Mickey Mouse ears: the Irish celebrity is starring in a scandalous new Disney+ series based on a Jilly Cooper novel!
Goodbye Tricorn Hat, Hello Mickey Mouse Ears
In a recent interview, Aidan Turner shared a bit about the TV show Rivals, which is based on Jilly Cooper’s salacious novel from the Rutshire Chronicles.
The show also stars David Tennant, Alex Hassell, and Danny Dyer — and Turner shared that there is such an unprecedented level of sex on the Disney+ series that multiple intimacy coordinators have been hired to manage the sex scenes and ensure that these delicate scenes are filmed properly and with the right level of safety, comfort, and consent!
Great to hear @aidanturner loves #JillyCooper as much as we do. We cannot wait for this show 🍾😍 #Rivals @HappyPrinceTV https://t.co/fUKXRnoFes

“We Have So Much Sex on Our Show”
“We have so much sex on our show, we have to have two intimacy coaches. Two!” Turner said enthusiastically.
According to Deadline, “Rivals is based on the 1988 bestselling romp-novel by Jilly Cooper of the same name – the second in her hit Rutshire Chronicles books, chronicling the 1980s excess of the lives and many loves of well-to-do characters on the polo fields and in the television studios of the picturesque Cotswolds, in the west of England”.
Jilly Cooper herself said that she was “so, so excited” about the Disney+ eight-part series based on her second Rutshire Chronicles novel.

“Throughout my childhood, my favourite word was ‘Disney’, and by a miraculous coincidence, greater-than-ever Disney are joining forces with an utterly brilliant drama company, Happy Prince, to turn my novel into a TV series,” Cooper announced.
“I know they will bring the boardroom battles and love triangles of my characters to life – particularly those of my devastatingly handsome hero,” she finished.
“Every day we’re in a different huge manor house somewhere, having garden parties. And it is that thing as well, which happens sometimes in shows — and I see it happening [here], though none of us have kind of admitted to it, but it’s definitely there — where there’s a slight methody thing happening,” Turner confessed. “We’re all up for the party. We went out the other night to the Ivy. We had a late night, lots of cocktails.”
A Season Two Already?
“Never wanted a season two of anything more in my life,” the Irish actor added happily.
Are you surprised to hear that Disney is creating a show as X-rated and steamy as a Jilly Cooper novel like this book from the Rutshire Chronicles series, particularly since Disney has been trying very hard to be PC these days?
