Marvel has delivered plenty of surprises over the years, but few have divided fans like this. Disney is seemingly pursuing another controversial MCU project, news that many hoped would never come.
Instead of generating hype, the decision has raised serious questions about whether Marvel is listening to its fans.

Marvel’s Winning Formula
Sequels have always been a vital part of Marvel’s playbook. When done right, they elevate characters and push the franchise forward. Thor: Ragnarok (2017) reinvented a tired series, Avengers: Endgame (2019) became one of the most successful films of all time, and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) showed that even irreverent heroes can shine in follow-ups.
Marvel has built its empire on the promise that each return will outdo the last. But with Doctor Strange, fans are still nursing wounds from his previous solo outing.

From Breakthrough to Backlash
Stephen Strange debuted in Doctor Strange (2016), a visually stunning introduction that cemented Benedict Cumberbatch as a key player. His role in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) gave fans unforgettable Multiverse cameos, solidifying his importance in Marvel’s future.
Then came Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). Expectations were sky-high, but the film failed to deliver. With its confusing narrative and wasted opportunities, it quickly became one of Marvel’s most criticized projects. The message from fans afterward was clear: no more sequels.

The Return of Strange Academy
Despite that, Disney is betting big on Strange again. Insiders confirm that Strange Academy was once thought to be shelved and resurfaced as the next chapter.
Drawing from the comics, the story would reimagine Strange as a mentor, training young sorcerers from different worlds. Instead of a theatrical release, this project would reportedly come to Disney+, placing it alongside Marvel’s growing library.
The comic version introduced an academy similar to the X-Men’s school, with Strange overseeing students learning to manage their powers while facing otherworldly threats. For Marvel, it’s a chance to expand the mystical side of the MCU. For fans, it’s a risky experiment with a character they no longer trust.

Fan Concerns Grow
The announcement has sparked heavy criticism. Many argue that Marvel should focus on rebuilding its core Avengers team instead of pushing another divisive project.
Others point to growing fatigue with Multiverse storylines, which have begun to feel repetitive and overused. Adding a classroom of unfamiliar characters to the mix only fuels doubts about whether this project can win audiences back.

The Stakes Are High
Disney’s willingness to greenlight Strange Academy shows how much the company still values Doctor Strange’s role in the MCU. If it lands, the series could introduce a new generation of magical heroes and reshape the franchise’s future.
If it fails, though, it risks confirming the belief that Marvel is running out of steam. For fans, the question lingers: Is this the bold new chapter Marvel needs—or the sequel that finally proves the magic is gone?
