Disney World Confirms 6-Month Magic Kingdom Closure Ending With Massive Upgrades

A nearly six-month wait is about to end at Magic Kingdom, and Disney is giving guests a first look at what will be waiting when the doors finally open again.

Big Top Souvenirs has remained closed in Storybook Circus since February, leaving guests without one of Fantasyland's more distinctive shopping-and-snacks options. The colorful location normally gives visitors a chance to browse Disney merchandise while picking up circus-inspired desserts under the same tent.

Now, Walt Disney World has put an official reopening date on the calendar.

Big Top Souvenirs will return August 21, and Disney is teasing “sweet surprises and tasty treats” as part of its comeback. The reopening restores another familiar Magic Kingdom location during a period when construction and major projects continue throughout the park.

Big Top Souvenirs Has Been Missing for Months

Guests can find Big Top Souvenirs in Storybook Circus, the section of Fantasyland centered around a colorful circus atmosphere and Dumbo the Flying Elephant.

The shop carries that theme inside. Rather than serving only as a place to buy Disney merchandise, Big Top Souvenirs also gives guests access to desserts and other sweet treats.

That made its February closure noticeable for visitors spending time in Storybook Circus.

Disney closed Big Top Souvenirs on February 20, 2026, beginning a shutdown that would ultimately stretch through much of the year. The location remained unavailable throughout the spring and continued sitting closed for most of the summer.

After nearly six months, however, Disney is ready to reopen the tent.

Disney Confirms an August 21 Return

Walt Disney World has announced that Big Top Souvenirs will reopen to Magic Kingdom guests on August 21.

The announcement does more than provide an end date for the lengthy closure. Disney is also starting to reveal what visitors can expect when they return.

The company says Big Top Souvenirs will offer “sweet surprises and tasty treats,” and a teaser image provides an early glimpse at some of the food coming to the location.

Mickey Mouse and Dumbo both appear prominently in the preview, allowing the treats to continue the playful theme already found throughout Storybook Circus.

Several Disney Treats Have Already Been Teased

Guests looking for something sweet will have several options, according to Disney's early preview.

The teased lineup includes:

  • Mickey Churro Caramel Apple
  • Dumbo Caramel Apple
  • Dumbo Sandwich Cookie
  • Marshmallow Pops
  • Cupcakes
  • Circus Chips

The selection includes several types of desserts rather than focusing entirely on a single option.

Guests looking for a larger treat can choose from the Mickey Churro or Dumbo caramel apples. The Dumbo Sandwich Cookie provides another character-inspired choice, while cupcakes and marshmallow pops offer additional options.

Circus Chips also fit naturally with the overall carnival atmosphere surrounding Big Top Souvenirs.

Disney hasn't indicated that the teaser represents everything guests will find when the location reopens. Its promise of “sweet surprises and tasty treats” could mean additional offerings will become clear once guests return on August 21.

Construction Continues Across Magic Kingdom

While Storybook Circus prepares to regain one familiar location, other sections of Magic Kingdom remain in the middle of much larger projects.

Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress remains closed in Tomorrowland for a major update. Disney has confirmed new scenes, updated technology, and a new Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic for the attraction, which is expected to reopen in 2027.

Elsewhere, Disney permanently closed the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Bell Riverboat in 2025 to make room for Piston Peak National Park.

Disney is also moving forward with its future Villains-themed land beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Together, those projects represent major changes for Magic Kingdom over the next several years. Against that backdrop, reopening Big Top Souvenirs restores one established part of the park while Disney continues working on what comes next.

The Long Storybook Circus Closure Is Ending

For guests heading to Storybook Circus, August 21 will bring back a convenient place to shop, cool off indoors, and grab a Disney-themed dessert.

Big Top Souvenirs has been missing from the Magic Kingdom lineup since February 20. Nearly six months later, its doors are finally ready to reopen.

Disney has already given guests a taste of what to expect, but the full experience will become clearer when visitors step back inside.

For now, the lengthy wait is almost over, and Storybook Circus is preparing to get another piece of its familiar lineup back.
