Disney Has No Plans for ‘Encanto’ Sequel, Producer Says

Fans hoping to return to the Madrigal family on the big screen will have to wait. A Walt Disney Animation Studios producer has confirmed that no sequel to Encanto (2021) is currently being discussed, though she made clear she would welcome one.

Yvett Merino, a Creative Executive at Walt Disney Animation Studios, addressed the question in an interview with The Direct. She was promoting the studio's upcoming original film, Hexed (2026), when the subject of Encanto came up.

The musical had a modest theatrical run after the COVID-19 pandemic, but it became a breakout hit once it reached Disney+. Even with the recent success of Zootopia 2 (2025) and Moana 2 (2024), Merino said no one at the studio has talked about greenlighting a follow-up.

She didn't shut the door, though.

“No, but I'm always here for it,” she said. “Encanto is the first film that I produced, and it really holds a very special place in my heart, because it's about a Latino family in the forefront. So anything that has to do with the world of Encanto, I'm in for.”

Earlier Hints and Cast Interest

This isn't the first time Merino has discussed the franchise's future. In a 2023 interview with The Direct, she teased that Disney was continuing to “look at different ways that [they] can keep the world alive” for fans around the globe.

The cast has voiced enthusiasm as well. John Leguizamo, the voice of Bruno, said in 2025 that he'd “love to see a sequel” to the film.

While a second movie isn't in development, the family is heading to Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Mirabel Madrigal and her relatives will play a central role in Pueblo Esperanza, a Tropical Americas land under construction at Walt Disney World Resort.

The land will feature El Carrusel de los Animalitos, a wood-carved carousel with animals from various Disney films, along with Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent, the reimagined DINOSAUR attraction. It will also include Antonio's Fiesta de Encanto, inspired by Casita, the Madrigals' magical home. That ride is set on the day Antonio receives his gift of speaking to animals and stars multiple original cast members, including Stephanie Beatriz (Mirabel), Jessica Darrow (Luisa), Dianne Guerrero (Isabela), and Adassa (Dolores).

Merino said she's “really excited” to see Casita built at Walt Disney World Resort.

“What I'm really excited for now is the Casita that's opening up in Florida in the parks,” she said. “They're building a whole Casita and an attraction there. I'm excited for that. But anything Encanto, I'm there for.”

Pueblo Esperanza is expected to open sometime in 2027.
