Disney Moving Fast: One Year After Remake, Shocking New ‘Stitch’ Project Confirmed for Theaters

Disney has officially mapped out what's next for one of its most popular characters, and Stitch fans have more than one reason to get excited. After the incredible success of the live-action remake, many expected the next chapter to arrive with the already announced sequel. Instead, Disney surprised audiences by revealing another theatrical project that will reach theaters much sooner.

A Disney Favorite That Has Stood the Test of Time

Long before the recent blockbuster brought Stitch back into the spotlight, the blue alien had already become one of Disney's most enduring characters. Lilo & Stitch (2002) introduced moviegoers to the touching relationship between Lilo, a lonely young girl living in Hawaii, and Stitch, a chaotic alien experiment who slowly comes to understand the meaning of family.

The film struck a balance between comedy, emotion, and adventure, helping it stand apart from many animated movies released during the early 2000s. Its message about acceptance and the importance of family continues to resonate with viewers today.

Since then, Stitch has remained a major part of Disney through television shows, home video releases, merchandise, and appearances in Disney Parks. More than 20 years later, his popularity has only continued to grow.

The Billion-Dollar Comeback Changed Everything

Disney's decision to revisit the franchise with Lilo & Stitch (2025) proved to be a major victory.

The live-action adaptation became a worldwide phenomenon, earning more than $1.038 billion globally. That achievement made it the highest-grossing live-action-and-animated hybrid movie in box-office history.

Its success showed that audiences still had a strong connection to Stitch. Fans who loved the original returned to theaters, while younger viewers experienced the character for the very first time.

With numbers like that, Disney wasted little time expanding the franchise.

Disney Reveals Another Stitch Movie for 2026

Before the live-action sequel arrives, Stitch will return to theaters differently.

Disney has confirmed that Lilo & Scratch, a brand-new theatrical short, will premiere in November 2026.

The project made its first public appearance during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. According to Deadline, the story introduces a mischievous new cat whose goal is to eat Stitch's beloved fish, Pudge. The setup promises another adventure filled with the playful trouble that has always defined the character.

The short also brings back familiar talent. Chris Sanders returns once again as the voice of Stitch, while Maia Kealoha reprises her role as Lilo after starring in the live-action remake.

The announcement gives fans another chance to see Stitch on the big screen much sooner than expected while helping bridge the gap before the next feature film.

Disney Has Bigger Plans for Stitch

The upcoming short is only part of Disney's growing plans for the franchise.

The company has also confirmed that the live-action Lilo & Stitch story will continue with a sequel scheduled for theatrical release on May 26, 2028.

Chris Sanders is expected to return while continuing to voice Stitch, keeping one of the franchise's most recognizable creative figures closely involved with the next chapter.

Disney has not shared story details yet, but announcing another film after the first crossed the billion-dollar mark comes as little surprise. The remake quickly became one of Disney's biggest theatrical successes, making a follow-up feel like the obvious next step.

Stitch's Big Screen Journey Is Far From Over

Disney's latest announcements show that Stitch remains one of the studio's biggest priorities.

Fans won't have to wait long before seeing him return, with Lilo & Scratch arriving in November 2026 and the live-action sequel following on May 26, 2028.

Very few Disney characters have maintained this level of popularity for more than two decades, yet Stitch continues attracting new fans while remaining just as beloved by longtime audiences. If the recent box office numbers proved anything, it's that Experiment 626 still has plenty of life left on the big screen.
