For Disney fans, the early morning ritual of “rope drop” has long been a hallmark of a well-planned park day, an experience where visitors eagerly await the moment the gates swing open to usher them into the magic. But at EPCOT, Disney has just introduced a significant change to how that moment unfolds—one that could reshape the way parkgoers experience the first moments of their day.
Rope drop, as seasoned Disney World visitors know, refers to the time when guests are first allowed to enter the park or specific areas, often resulting in a race to favorite attractions. While guests typically enter before the official opening hour, they are held at strategic points behind an actual rope until the designated start time. This controlled entry helps manage crowd flow, ensuring an orderly and efficient start to the day. For many, arriving early is part of the strategy to grab a coveted spot in line for a park’s most popular rides.

Historically, non-resort guests at EPCOT had their rope drop experience directly in front of Spaceship Earth, creating an inevitable logjam as early arrivals flocked to the park’s iconic centerpiece.
But that has now changed. A new report from WDWMAGIC reveals that, moving forward, non-resort guests will now be guided to the left of Spaceship Earth. This new route leads them past the iconic sphere and toward a holding area near Connections Café.
In contrast, guests staying at Disney Resort hotels or select partner resorts, known as Early Entry guests, will be directed to the right of Spaceship Earth, allowing for a more seamless distinction between resort and non-resort visitors.

This overhaul is designed with one thing in mind: reducing congestion and streamlining guest flow. Anyone who has experienced the intense morning rush at EPCOT can appreciate the impact of this shift. With guests crowding around the base of Spaceship Earth in the past, this move alleviates the bottleneck and spreads the influx of people across a broader area, making the early park entry more manageable.
But the timing of this change is telling. EPCOT is gearing up for a major shift with the February 2025 transition of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind from a Virtual Queue to a traditional standby line.
For the first time, guests will be able to join the line for this much-anticipated ride at any time during the day, eliminating the need for the app-based boarding group system that has caused both headaches and excitement since the attraction’s debut. Disney’s timing of this new entry system suggests they expect higher morning demand, with guests heading straight for the ride in the absence of the previous virtual system.

While it likely plays a huge role in the decision, we’d argue that this adjustment is not just about Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. It’s about optimizing the morning flow for other popular attractions as well. From Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure in the France Pavilion to Frozen Ever After in Norway, the morning crowd will be more evenly dispersed, giving everyone a better shot at tackling EPCOT’s top experiences without the usual bottleneck.
This latest update to EPCOT’s operations fits into the broader transformation of the park in recent years.
From reimagining Future World into the distinct neighborhoods of World Celebration, World Discovery, and World Nature to the addition of rides like Cosmic Rewind, EPCOT is far from the park it once was. No longer solely a celebration of technology and global cultures, EPCOT has embraced an expanded storytelling approach that leans heavily into Disney’s vast library of IP—a change that has sparked debate among longtime fans.

In the wake of COVID-19, several planned elements of this transformation were scrapped, including the much-anticipated overhaul of Spaceship Earth and the Mary Poppins (1964) attraction planned for the UK Pavilion. While some changes have sparked excitement, others have left fans questioning whether the park has lost some of its original identity.
Still, Disney’s ability to adapt continues to shine through, and the new morning entry process at EPCOT signals that the company is focused on creating a more enjoyable, efficient experience for visitors. Whether this new approach will deliver on its promises remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—EPCOT’s transformation is far from over.
