Disney+ Recasts Luke Skywalker After 49 Years, New ‘Star Wars’ Actor Confirmed

One of the most recognizable characters in Star Wars history is headed back to Disney+ next month, but his September 2 return comes with a surprising change.

Luke Skywalker will once again appear during a moment that became one of the biggest surprises of the Disney+ era. Viewers will recognize the black clothing, the green lightsaber, and the Jedi cutting through enemies when Din Djarin and Grogu need help most.

The difference won't be immediately visible.

After 49 years of playing Luke across multiple projects, Mark Hamill won't perform the character for this appearance.

Luke Skywalker is coming back on September 2

Luke's latest appearance comes in LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, a Disney+ animated special arriving September 2.

Instead of building its story entirely around new events, the special revisits memorable parts of The Mandalorian. Din Djarin, Grogu, Moff Gideon, and the Dark Troopers are among the familiar characters involved.

Luke enters the picture through a recreation of his Season 2 finale appearance.

Disney's trailer waits until the end to reveal him. Wearing black and carrying his green lightsaber, Luke fights through Dark Troopers in a sequence modeled after his dramatic 2020 return.

However, viewers won't hear Hamill when Luke speaks.

Disney+ Has a Different Voice Behind Luke

Hamill first became Luke Skywalker in Star Wars back in 1977, beginning an association with the Jedi that has now lasted 49 years.

He hasn't played every version of Luke during that time. Other actors have voiced the character for animated productions and video games.

Still, Hamill has continued returning to the role.

Lucasfilm brought him back to voice LEGO Luke in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy (2024). He also participated in Luke's much-discussed appearance during The Mandalorian.

That live-action return required Lucasfilm to present a younger version of Luke. Visual effects and a body double helped recreate the character while Hamill remained involved in the process.

This new Disney+ special takes another route.

Eric Bauza will voice Luke in LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian instead.

The casting doesn't establish Bauza as a permanent replacement for Hamill. Lucasfilm also hasn't said Hamill is finished playing Luke.

It simply means this particular return will happen without him.

Luke's Mandalorian Rescue Gets Another Version

Luke couldn't have arrived at a more important time during the original The Mandalorian sequence.

Din Djarin and his allies were aboard Moff Gideon's ship with Dark Troopers closing in. The group faced an enemy they weren't equipped to defeat.

Then a single X-wing appeared.

Luke entered the ship and fought his way through the Dark Troopers before finally reaching Din, Grogu, and the others.

He had sensed Grogu's call through the Force and came to take him away for Jedi training.

The new version keeps the basic events intact but changes the tone.

When Din and Bo-Katan fail to recognize Luke immediately, the Jedi reminds them that he's “kind of a big deal.”

That humor gives the familiar rescue a different personality without completely changing the moment fans remember.

Luke's Familiar Look Isn't Going Anywhere

The voice may be different, but this version of Luke remains visually close to his appearance in The Mandalorian.

He still wears black and carries the green lightsaber associated with the character following Return of the Jedi (1983).

The timeline explains why Luke looks considerably younger than he does in the sequel trilogy.

The Mandalorian occurs several years after Return of the Jedi (1983), placing this version of Luke much closer to the Jedi who faced Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine.

Animation also removes the live-action challenge of presenting a younger Luke.

That allows the special to recreate this version of the character without accounting for Hamill's real-world age.

Disney+ Has Two Mandalorian Releases Coming

September 2 won't only bring Luke's latest appearance.

Din Djarin and Grogu spent three seasons together on The Mandalorian before moving from Disney+ to theaters in The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026).

Now, their theatrical adventure is heading to Disney+ on the same day as the animated special.

Both The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026) and LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian arrive on September 2.

For Luke, that date will mark another unusual chapter in a story that started nearly five decades ago.

Hamill remains the performer most closely associated with Luke Skywalker, and nothing about this project permanently changes that relationship.

This time, however, Disney+ is bringing Luke back without Mark Hamill behind him.
