In a surprising twist, Disney’s EPCOT failed to open on time this morning, catching many guests off guard and stirring up frustration for those who had meticulously planned an early start. While EPCOT is typically known for its smooth operations, today’s delayed opening left guests in the dark, with no official updates from Disney on its My Disney Experience app to explain the hold-up or advise on next steps.

Many guests were banking on an early entry for access to popular attractions and experiences, and this setback impacted not only early morning plans but also reservations and special passes. Although Disney usually communicates significant disruptions, no notice or update about this delay has been issued so far. With EPCOT being big enough to fit over 100,000 guests, this would have certainly caused a massive pile up.

The news was shared via All Ears this morning, “EPCOT has failed to open on time this morning. A Cast Member announcement explained they were dealing with technical difficulties.”

Why Rope Drop Matters for Disney Guests

Rope dropping—arriving at the gates before the official opening—has become an essential strategy for Disney visitors looking to maximize their experience. By arriving early, guests can access in-demand attractions before regular park hours, avoiding long waits and setting the tone for a full day of fun. This approach is especially beneficial at Disney parks, where popular rides quickly rack up wait times that can last for hours.

Guests who make it in for rope drop typically prioritize rides like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Test Track, and Frozen Ever After, where lines are usually shorter in the early hours. Rope drop allows guests to cross off these major attractions first, freeing up the rest of the day for a more relaxed pace.

While all Disney parks attract early birds, EPCOT offers a special advantage for those who arrive early. With some of its most popular rides located in Future World, guests who rope drop EPCOT can enjoy top attractions before the crowds arrive and then move on to World Showcase as it opens later in the day. This flow lets visitors experience high-demand attractions like Soarin’ Around the World and Mission: SPACE with much shorter waits.

Disney Resort guests also benefit from Early Entry, which allows them to enter EPCOT 30 minutes before the general public, adding even more incentive for resort-goers to start their day at EPCOT. This head start is especially valuable for securing access to rides that later attract long lines. Today’s delay, however, prevented many of these guests from enjoying that early access, resulting in missed opportunities to experience EPCOT’s premier attractions.

Disney’s Silence on EPCOT’s Delay Leaves Guests Guessing

The lack of communication from Disney on the My Disney Experience app added to the confusion, with guests left waiting outside and wondering if any steps would be taken to accommodate those affected by the delay. Many had carefully scheduled their mornings around Early Entry and Lightning Lane bookings, which are often essential for avoiding extensive wait times at EPCOT’s most popular rides.

Without updates from Disney, guests were left speculating whether they’d be offered options to reschedule missed reservations or receive credits for Lightning Lane passes they were unable to use. Some families, particularly those with young children, expressed disappointment that their early morning efforts had been for nothing, especially when hoping for a memorable Disney experience.

While it remains unclear if Disney will offer compensation or adjustments for those impacted, today’s delay at EPCOT has underscored the importance of clear communication. As of now, Disney has not announced any official plans to address the disrupted entry, but if further information becomes available, we will update with the latest details.

For now, guests impacted by EPCOT’s delayed opening are left hoping for some acknowledgment from Disney and clarity on how the situation will be handled going forward.
