Disney World has never been shy about updating its parks, but longtime fans have begun to notice how many classic attractions have disappeared in recent years. Attractions that once defined entire lands are slowly being replaced, reimagined, or modernized as Disney pushes toward newer stories and updated experiences.
Now, another major piece of Magic Kingdom history is preparing to change forever.
Disney officially confirmed that Carousel of Progress inside Tomorrowland will temporarily close beginning July 6, 2026, for a major reimagining project. While the attraction itself is not leaving permanently, the current version guests have known for decades is officially reaching its final days.
For fans who grew up riding the attraction, that announcement carries a surprising amount of emotion.

Disney Continues Reworking Its Most Historic Attractions
Over the years, Disney has transformed several attractions that many guests once assumed would never change.
Splash Mountain closed and eventually became Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. EPCOT saw Maelstrom disappear in favor of Frozen Ever After, while World of Motion gave way to Test Track years earlier as Disney shifted toward more thrill-focused experiences.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios also changed dramatically after The Great Movie Ride permanently closed and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway moved into the iconic theater.
Some of those updates became popular with newer audiences. Others still spark debate among longtime Disney fans who miss the original attractions and storytelling that once defined the parks.
Now, Carousel of Progress joins that growing list of attractions preparing for major changes.
Still, Disney is not completely rebuilding the attraction from scratch.

Carousel of Progress Represents a Different Era of Disney
Unlike many attractions at Magic Kingdom, Carousel of Progress does not rely on giant drops, intense thrills, or advanced ride systems to attract guests.
The attraction survives because of nostalgia.
Located inside Tomorrowland, Carousel of Progress follows the same family through several decades as technology evolves around them. The rotating theater moves guests scene by scene through changing eras of American life while showcasing new inventions, entertainment systems, appliances, and visions of the future.
For many guests, the attraction feels almost frozen in time.
Its classic animatronics, slower pacing, and memorable soundtrack give the attraction a charm that feels very different from modern Disney rides. Guests still walk out singing “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” even after riding it countless times over the years.
The attraction also remains deeply important to Disney history because Walt Disney originally developed the concept for the 1964 New York World’s Fair before it moved to Disneyland and eventually to Magic Kingdom.
That personal connection to Walt Disney himself makes Carousel of Progress feel especially significant to longtime fans.

Disney Reveals New Additions and Timeline Changes
Disney has teased updates to Carousel of Progress for a while, but the company finally confirmed major details surrounding the attraction’s future.
Beginning July 6, 2026, the attraction will officially close for its large-scale reimagining project.
When the attraction reopens, guests will experience several major changes throughout the show. One of the biggest additions involves a brand-new Walt Disney animatronic appearing during the opening sequence.
Disney says the scene draws inspiration from the 1964 television special “Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair,” where Walt Disney first introduced audiences to the Carousel of Progress concept.
Disney also confirmed the attraction’s timeline is changing significantly.

The updated show will move through four revised eras:
Act 1: The 1960s
Act 2: The 1980s
Act 3: The New Millennium
Act 4: The Possible Future
Disney also plans to refresh portions of the attraction with updated technology, new dialogue, and modern visual effects aimed at younger audiences.
Some fans feel excited to see Disney investing in the attraction again. Others worry the updates could remove some of the nostalgic atmosphere that made Carousel of Progress special in the first place.

Disney Promises To Preserve the Attraction’s Heart
Even with the major changes coming, Disney says the core experience of Carousel of Progress will remain intact.
The attraction’s rotating theater system is staying, along with the family guests who follow throughout the show’s different eras.
Disney also confirmed that “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” is not going anywhere, which immediately calmed many fans online after rumors suggested the iconic song could disappear entirely.
Instead of fully replacing the attraction, Disney appears focused on balancing modernization with nostalgia.
Still, July 6, 2026, marks the end of one version of Magic Kingdom history. Once the attraction closes, guests will never again experience Carousel of Progress exactly as it exists today.
Whether fans embrace the new version or not, Tomorrowland is preparing for another major evolution.
