Disney added something new to Magic Kingdom this week and did not say a word about it.
No construction wall. No concept art. No two-year fan debate about whether it was going to be worth the wait. It just turned up in a Tomorrowland gift shop one morning, as it had always been there.
We are talking about a pressed penny machine. Stay with us, because this one is actually good.
The new machine is themed to TRON Lightcycle Run; it holds eight different designs, and the whole set costs five dollars. In a park where a single popcorn bucket can run you triple digits on the resale market, that is a genuinely wild number.
Where It Turned Up at Magic Kingdom

The placement is not random. That shop sits right next to TRON Lightcycle Run, and the machine has been designed to match, borrowing its look from both the ride and the movie. It blends into the space instead of sticking out like a vending machine somebody parked in the wrong place.

If you have walked through Launch Depot before, you know the shop already commits hard to the Grid aesthetic. This just gives you one more reason to duck inside.
The Lineup
Eight designs. All TRON.
Four of them put characters on Lightcycles. That is Mickey, Goofy, Minnie, and Donald.
Three more show characters in TRON outfits are playing with discs. Pluto, Goofy, and Mickey.
Then there is the eighth one, and this is the one people are going to want. Stitch. By himself. In a TRON outfit.
Every penny in the set says “Tomorrowland” along the bottom, which makes the whole thing feel like a real collection rather than eight random designs sharing a slot.
Stitch merchandise at Walt Disney World disappears faster than almost anything else on property, and dressing him up in TRON gear is the kind of crossover that gets screenshotted and passed around fast.
The Price
A dollar a penny. Five dollars for all eight.
Disney's own description of its coin presses calls them easy, fun, and inexpensive, and pitches the result as a souvenir that is as cost-effective as it is unforgettable. For once, the marketing copy is not overselling it.
If you are traveling with kids and trying to keep the souvenir spending under control, this is about as painless as it gets in Magic Kingdom.
Quick Word on the Ride
If the machine gets you curious about the coaster it is themed to, it is right outside.
TRON Lightcycle Run loads you onto your own Lightcycle for a run across the Grid, the dark computerized world with no horizons from the TRON films. You ride with Team Blue against the Grid's most menacing Programs and try to clear eight Energy Gates for the win. It is one of the fastest coasters at any Disney theme park anywhere.
The backstory goes deep. TRON hit theaters in 1982 and made filmmaking history as the first production of its kind to blend live action with computer-generated visuals and backlit animation. It spun off video games, comic books, an animated series, the 2010 sequel TRON: Legacy, and eventually this attraction.
Eight Energy Gates on the ride. Eight pennies in the machine. That is not an accident.
The Rest of the Hunt at Magic Kingdom
Magic Kingdom is loaded with these things if you catch the bug.
Coin presses are at the Walt Disney World Railroad on Main Street and again in Frontierland, Tony's Town Square Restaurant, Engine Co. 71 Firehouse Gift Station, the Emporium, Star Traders, Buzz's Star Command, Buzz Lightyear Ranger Spin Photos, Sir Mickey's, Fantasy Faire, The Hall of Presidents, Haunted Mansion, Country Bear Jamboree, Tomorrowland Speedway Cart, Island Supply by Sunglass Hut, Plaza del Sol Caribe Bazaar, Jungle Cruise, The Hall of Champions, Curtain Call Merchandise, Frontierland, and now Tomorrowland Launch Depot.
That is north of twenty machines in a single park. Disney recommends pulling up the map for exact placements, since they occasionally get moved.
Hold Your Wallet Close
New additions at Walt Disney World usually come with a marketing campaign attached. This one came with nothing.
But eight designs for five bucks, tied to one of the fastest coasters Disney has ever built, is a hard deal to pass up. If TRON is already on your touring plan, Launch Depot is a few steps away.
One piece of advice. Bring actual coins. Pennies and quarters. There is nothing worse than finding the machine and realizing everything in your wallet is plastic.
