Disney Censors Deadpool: Family-Friendly Alternative Introduced for MCU Debut

Deadpool finally joins the Disney family this week – but Disney’s made its changes to the foul-mouthed superhero.

Eight years after 20th Century Fox released Deadpool (2016), the “merc with a mouth” is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe tomorrow with the release of Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).

The much-hyped film not only sees Ryan Reynolds reprise his role as the eponymous vigilante (whose real name is Wade Wilson) but will also see Hugh Jackman star as James “Logan” Howlett, AKA Wolverine, for the first time since Logan (2017). This team-up has been a long time coming. While the duo previously starred together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), the film – especially its depiction of Deadpool – was widely panned.

Reynolds has made no secret of his desire to get a second chance at nailing the duo’s chemistry. However, it seemed like a long shot – until Jackman himself realized he missed playing Wolverine and called Reynolds to tell him he was ready to pursue the project. “I didn’t miss it for a long time,” Jackman told Variety.

“And then, literally, it came to me one day as I was driving down to the beach. I knew I wanted to do this. I literally stopped the car, got out, and called Ryan. He said, ‘Are you serious?’ I said, ‘I’m serious.’ And I hung up the phone.”

Of course, this also coincided with The Walt Disney Company purchasing 20th Century Fox, in turn inheriting Deadpool and the X-Men sandbox. With Marvel Studios taking over responsibility for any future Deadpool films, some were concerned that it would Disney-fy the franchise – by which we mean sanitizing it of crude language, toilet humor, OTT violence, and all the things that make Deadpool, well, Deadpool.

Fortunately, this isn’t the case. The franchise’s third installment looks to be as explicit and inappropriate as its predecessors.

As an added bonus, the list of rumored cameos is long (seriously, we challenge you to find one name loosely connected to Marvel that hasn’t been rumored for this film yet), with names such as Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier/Professor X) and Blake Lively (wife of Ryan Reynolds who many believe will take on the mantle of Lady Deadpool).

This time around, Deadpool will team up with Wolverine after the Time Variance Authority (first introduced in the Disney+ series Loki) recruits him to help safeguard the Multiverse against Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin). The first reviews are extremely positive, with a critics’ score of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing, signaling that Shawn Levy’s first entry in the MCU may just be the balm the franchise needs after several (mostly) lackluster years.

As is typically the case with new Marvel releases, the film is being heavily promoted within Disney parks. Earlier this week, it was announced that Deadpool would make his Disney park debut at Avengers Campus in both Disney California Adventure Park and Walt Disney Studios Park – marking the first time Disney has ever featured a character appearance inspired by an R-rated film.

While Disney may not have censored Deadpool in the films, it seems like they have intervened with his theme park appearances. Deadpool debuted in Disneyland Paris today, where he was stripped of his trademark guns on each hip. Instead, he’s armed with… Baguettes?

Yep, guests at Avengers Campus in Walt Disney Studios Park have spotted the character strolling the rooftops of the land with baguettes in each pocket. Not very mercenary-friendly (but, at the same time, weirdly on theme for the character in their absurdity).

Baguettes aside, Deadpool’s premiere at the park was as hilarious as you’d expect. Videos shared by DLP Report show the character spouting off witty remarks such as “what a great view… Of construction walls” (referencing Walt Disney Studios Park’s seemingly endless state of renovation ahead of its reimagination as Disney Adventure World) and “no, no, I’m not from The Incredibles, it’s really me.”

???? Iconic quotes from Deadpool’s appearance:
– “I love Celine Dion”
– “What a great view.. on construction walls”
– “No no I’m not from The Incredibles it’s really me”
– “Gotta go, there’s only 10 min at it’s a small world”

If you want to catch a glimpse of Deadpool, you’ll need to move fast. His stint at both Walt Disney Studios Park and Disney California Adventure Park (where he’ll arrive on July 26) has been described as limited.
