Thousands of Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort vacations are facing cancellations and delays now that the REAL ID Act has officially taken effect. Starting May 7, 2025, travelers without a REAL ID-compliant form of identification will be turned away at TSA checkpoints, even if they’ve already booked airline tickets or Disney Resort reservations.
The REAL ID Act, which was passed by Congress back in 2005 as part of a post-9/11 security measure, has been delayed multiple times over the years. Initially set to take effect in 2008, the deadline was pushed back due to implementation issues in certain states and further delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. With the new regulations now in full force, U.S. travelers must have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID, a U.S. passport, a DHS Trusted Traveler card, or a military ID to fly domestically.
While minors under 18 are not required to have a REAL ID as long as an adult with the proper identification accompanies them, the rules are strict for adults. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has made it clear that there will be no exceptions. This means that adults without the gold or black star on their state-issued ID will not be allowed to board a plane.
For travelers planning to fly into Orlando International Airport (MCO), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), or other U.S. airports, this means that Disney vacations could be in jeopardy if the necessary documentation is not in place. The TSA has stated that some passengers who have already flown before the May 7 deadline can return on their round-trip flights without a REAL ID, but they will face additional screening, and entry is not guaranteed.
As we look ahead to the peak vacation months for Disney Resorts, this change is especially significant. Disney fans hoping to make their dream trips to the parks will want to ensure their identification meets the new requirements before booking or flying. There is no telling how many Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort vacations will be impacted by these new regulations, so it’s important for guests to act quickly.
If you haven’t already, double-check your identification before booking your vacation. If you haven’t done so yet, make an appointment at the DMV to upgrade to a REAL ID.
