Disney’s newest Animal Kingdom attraction is already evolving.
For decades, the Tree of Life has served as the visual and thematic centerpiece of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Beyond its carved exterior, the park icon also houses a theater that once hosted It’s Tough to Be a Bug!, one of the resort’s longest-running 4D shows.
That attraction closed to make way for Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, which debuted on November 7, 2025. The new production follows Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, and other familiar faces as they mark Zoogether Day through celebrations staged across the city’s different biomes.
The replacement was designed to bring one of Disney Animation’s most successful modern franchises into Animal Kingdom. However, its arrival quickly became one of the park’s more divisive recent changes, with some guests questioning both the show itself and its location beneath the Tree of Life.
Now, less than a year after opening, Disney has adjusted the experience following widespread criticism from parkgoers.
A New Face Arrives Beneath the Tree of Life
The latest update adds Mayor Brian Winddancer to the attraction’s pre-show, giving guests a new introduction before they enter the Tree of Life Theater for the main 4D presentation.
Winddancer now welcomes the audience and establishes the premise of the celebration. The character had a prominent role in Zootopia 2, and his addition creates a clearer connection between the Animal Kingdom attraction and the film sequel.
Warburton returned to record the character after previously becoming familiar to Disney World visitors through his role in Soarin’. His recognizable voice gives the new pre-show sequence another direct link to the wider theme park resort.
Walt Disney Animation Studios animators and filmmakers collaborated with Walt Disney Imagineering’s story team to develop the scene.

Disney rehearsed the sequence overnight inside the theater before launching it for guests yesterday. Audio, lighting, special effects, and figure animation teams worked through the new material together, checking that every element lined up with the revised timing.
Although the update does not replace the central show, it changes how guests are introduced to its story. The added setup appears intended to make the attraction feel more complete before its rapid tour through Zootopia begins.
Disney Responds After a Rough Opening
Zootopia: Better Zoogether! faced immediate criticism when it replaced It’s Tough to Be a Bug!, which had operated inside the Tree of Life since Disney’s Animal Kingdom opened in 1998.
Some fans dismissed the new attraction as another example of Disney inserting intellectual property into a park built around animals, conservation, and the natural world. The debate extended beyond nostalgia for the previous show.
Critics argued that Zootopia’s urban setting did not sit naturally beneath the Tree of Life. Others believed the franchise’s themes could fit Animal Kingdom, but said the finished attraction failed to make that connection convincingly enough.
The production itself also drew complaints. Its fast-moving story sends guests between multiple locations and introduces a large number of characters in a relatively short period, leaving some viewers feeling that the experience was overcrowded.
The attraction’s limited use of physical and theatrical effects became another frequent point of criticism. Rather than delivering the layered 4D experience some visitors expected, the show was compared to an animated short playing inside a theme park theater.
That response put additional pressure on a replacement already facing resistance because of what it removed. It’s Tough to Be a Bug! had built a loyal following over more than 25 years, even if its darker moments startled younger guests.
The arrival of Mayor Winddancer does not address every complaint, but early reactions suggest fans appreciate Disney making adjustments so soon after the attraction’s debut.
“Very good sign that they are actually taking into account guest feedback again,” wrote one X user.
Another said, “We’re going down for a quick weekend trip next month and I was already looking forward to this, and now I’m even more excited!”
The revision also suggests Disney is willing to refine Zootopia: Better Zoogether! rather than treat its opening-day version as final.
Theme park attractions frequently evolve, but a notable story change within the first year signals that the company was paying attention to the response.
