Update Given as Disney World Delays Return of Opening Day Attraction

Disney World may be gearing up for one of the busiest weeks of the year, but it’s still pushed back the reopening of one attraction.

Disney’s parks are constantly evolving, and regular updates ensure that rides, shows, and other experiences stay fresh, safe, and up-to-date with new technology. While most closures are temporary and well-planned, some attractions undergo more extensive refurbishments, which can last for weeks or even months.

The Swiss Family Treehouse recently closed for a brief refurbishment in November. It was initially scheduled to reopen on December 20, 2024, just in time for the busy holiday season at Disney World.

But when December 20 arrived, the Swiss Family Treehouse had yet to reopen. As reported by BlogMickey, scaffolding, tarps, and other equipment were still surrounding the treehouse as Magic Kingdom opened that day.

The good news is that Disney has now quietly updated its schedule, with the attraction’s reopening pushed back to December 23, 2024, according to the Walt Disney World Resort website.

The Swiss Family Treehouse has been a staple of Magic Kingdom since 1971, providing a peaceful, walk-through experience inspired by the 1960 film Swiss Family Robinson. The attraction allows guests to wander through the Robinson family’s shipwrecked treehouse, complete with rooms like the kitchen, lookout tower, and bedrooms.

While newer, more exciting attractions have grabbed the spotlight in recent years, the Swiss Family Treehouse still plays an important role in Adventureland, offering a slower-paced, nostalgic, and even relaxing experience in the chaos that is sometimes Magic Kingdom Park.

The Swiss Family Treehouse is a self-guided attraction, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace. As they walk through the treehouse, they can appreciate its unique architecture, the scenic views of Adventureland, and the lush surroundings. Its elevated position offers a different perspective of the park, making it a great spot for photos (and a great place to get out of the sun come summer).

While some have shared their hopes for Disney to give the treehouse an IP makeover in recent years, citing Encanto (2021) as potential inspiration, this is one classic Magic Kingdom attraction for which we will gladly go down swinging.
