Universal’s Epic Universe Debut Set to Draw Record Crowds, Leaving Disney World Nearly Empty for a Day

The excitement around this unveiling has Orlando experts speculating that Disney World, a theme park juggernaut rarely found lacking for guests, could be unusually quiet for at least 24 hours. This rare lull may offer Disney World visitors a unique, crowd-free experience, but for many Orlando locals and international tourists, Universal’s latest attraction will be the place to be.

Universal’s Epic Universe is more than just a new theme park—it represents a multi-billion-dollar leap forward in entertainment technology and immersive experiences. It’s expected to attract an unprecedented number of guests, drawing people from around the globe eager to see what Universal describes as “the future of theme parks.” The attraction’s grand scale and fresh slate of rides and worlds promise to set a new standard in the industry, which will likely pull guests away from Disney World for at least a day.

What Guests Can Expect from Epic Universe

Epic Universe has been years in the making, and Universal is banking on its appeal to redefine the theme park experience. Divided into unique worlds, each area is designed to immerse guests in a highly interactive and tech-driven environment. One of the most talked-about lands is Super Nintendo World, where characters like Mario and Luigi come to life in vivid detail, thanks to Universal’s use of augmented reality and interactive attractions. For fans, this section of Epic Universe alone may justify the wait and travel.

In addition to Super Nintendo World, the park is expected to feature additional themed areas that bring beloved movies to life in immersive, fully realized environments. Universal’s investment in cutting-edge ride mechanics and immersive technology indicates that each land within Epic Universe will deliver a one-of-a-kind experience, likely enticing first-time and loyal guests alike. This focus on exclusive, themed entertainment is designed to attract the very demographic that might otherwise be found at Disney World, marking the opening as a strategic play in Orlando’s longstanding theme park rivalry.

Disney World’s Strategy: A Calculated Patience

Disney World’s approach to Universal’s big day appears to be patient, choosing not to launch any new attractions directly in response to the Epic Universe opening. While Universal is rolling out an entirely new park, Disney has been subtly upgrading its existing experiences with innovations like augmented reality in its Genie+ app and interactive features throughout its parks.

Disney’s patience may come as a surprise, but analysts suggest it’s part of a larger plan. Known for its emphasis on the guest experience, Disney has been investing in AI and other technologies to enhance storytelling and crowd management, although these developments aren’t expected to be fully implemented until after Epic Universe opens.

This isn’t Disney’s first time facing direct competition from Universal. Since Universal’s launch of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in 2010, the two giants have each expanded their offerings, with Disney introducing Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Avatar’s Pandora, among other new lands and attractions. This time, however, Universal’s brand-new park offers a blank slate with new experiences, presenting a more formidable draw that Disney may have to contend with.

A Historic Dip in Disney World Attendance?

Although Disney World rarely sees a drop in foot traffic, insiders anticipate May 22 could be an outlier. With Universal’s opening drawing in Orlando locals and tourists alike, Disney might experience one of its least crowded days of 2025. The typical Disney visitor—whether an annual passholder or a family vacationing from out of state—may be inclined to see what the buzz around Epic Universe is all about, at least for the initial launch.

Orlando’s hotel industry is also feeling the effects, with hotels near Universal reporting near-capacity bookings for the opening weekend. While Disney resorts haven’t yet offered discounts or promotions around this date, they may use the day as an opportunity to attract a more relaxed crowd seeking a quieter Disney experience.

For Disney fans who opt to skip the Epic Universe hype, this day may offer a rare experience. Popular rides like Space Mountain and Avatar Flight of Passage, notorious for long lines, could have shorter wait times, creating a unique opportunity for Disney loyalists who want to experience the parks in an unusually uncrowded atmosphere.

Universal’s Strategic Move and Disney’s Legacy

Universal’s massive new addition shifts Orlando’s theme park landscape, but Disney is playing the long game. Even as Universal commands attention with Epic Universe, Disney’s future developments are poised to attract returning guests. With a focus on immersive technology and AI-driven experiences, Disney is positioning itself to reassert its influence in the years following Epic Universe’s debut. These new experiences aren’t just about catching up to Universal’s latest attractions; they represent Disney’s broader commitment to leading in guest engagement through meaningful storytelling.

Despite this new competition, Disney’s iconic franchises, including Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar, remain powerful draws that give it an advantage Universal may struggle to match in terms of fan loyalty and cultural reach. Disney’s enduring appeal often lies in its ability to connect with visitors emotionally, a factor that can’t be replicated easily.

Universal’s strategy, on the other hand, involves capturing the excitement of something entirely new. By focusing on fresh IPs and high-tech interactions, Universal is setting itself apart, betting that guests will find the experience of Epic Universe different enough to choose it over the traditional Disney offerings, at least temporarily.

The Broader Impact on Orlando’s Theme Park Landscape

The debut of Epic Universe represents a defining moment in the Disney-Universal rivalry, with both companies setting their sights on Orlando’s future tourism market. The excitement around the new park is likely to draw guests worldwide, setting a benchmark that both Universal and Disney will use to gauge future growth. This competition has consistently pushed both parks to innovate, to the benefit of fans who enjoy the ever-evolving attractions.

Disney may remain in “wait and see” mode, but history suggests they won’t stand still. Their investments in interactive technology and guest-centered experiences signal a commitment to continue evolving alongside the competition. And while Universal takes the spotlight on opening day, Disney fans and industry insiders know that Disney’s response will likely be carefully planned and rolled out with equal grandeur in the coming years.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
