Disney World Erases Familiar Magic Kingdom Locations Overnight

Walt Disney World constantly evolves, but not every update arrives with a formal announcement. Sometimes the biggest clues appear in small details—like a change on a park map or a familiar location quietly fading away.

That’s exactly what guests have started noticing inside Magic Kingdom.

Two Frontierland locations that many visitors knew well have seemingly disappeared, and the change happened without much warning. For years, these spots offered quick snacks, souvenirs, or a place to pause while exploring the western side of the park.

Now, they appear to be missing.

Disney hasn’t issued a public explanation, but fans quickly spotted the difference when looking at official park maps online. The small markers that once represented those locations no longer appear the same way.

On their own, these updates might not seem dramatic. But they come at a time when Magic Kingdom is already undergoing a massive transformation.

Big New Lands Are Already Planned

The park’s future will look very different in the coming years.

Disney is preparing two major expansions that will significantly change the layout of Magic Kingdom. One is Piston Peak National Park, a land inspired by the world of Cars and designed around a wilderness-style national park setting.

Early artwork shows towering rock formations, rugged landscapes, and attractions themed around the fictional park environment.

The other project is a long-awaited Disney Villains Land. For years, fans imagined a section of the park dedicated entirely to Disney’s most infamous characters, and that concept is finally moving forward.

Disney has kept many specifics private for now, but the company has hinted that the land will feature immersive settings and major attractions built around its iconic villains.

These additions will dramatically expand Magic Kingdom—but first Disney needs space to build them.

Frontierland Is Where Much of the Work Is Happening

Frontierland sits at the center of the current construction activity.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad marks the edge of that area, and the land beyond it has become the launching point for several of Magic Kingdom’s future projects.

Guests visiting the park have already noticed cranes and other equipment working behind Big Thunder Mountain. That section of land is expected to connect to the upcoming Villains expansion.

At the same time, areas within Frontierland are beginning to change as Disney prepares for the arrival of Piston Peak National Park.

The scale of the project means construction activity now stretches across a large part of the land. Locations that once felt unchanged for decades now sit right next to construction zones and preparation areas.

As a result, some longtime Frontierland features have already disappeared.

Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island Made Way for Piston Peak

Two of the most significant losses came earlier when the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island were removed.

Those areas were cleared to allow construction of the new expansion of Piston Peak National Park. The river that once surrounded Tom Sawyer Island has been drained, and the landscape that defined the area has begun changing rapidly.

Construction teams have already poured concrete where the river once flowed, laying the groundwork for the new land that will eventually take shape there.

Meanwhile, work beyond Big Thunder Mountain continues as crews prepare the future site of Villains Land. When finished, the new land will extend Magic Kingdom further than it has ever gone before.

These changes signaled that Frontierland was entering a new era.

But guests didn’t expect even smaller locations to start disappearing without explanation.

Map Changes Reveal Two More Missing Locations

The latest change came through Disney’s official park maps.

Earlier this year, Disney filed permits tied to several Frontierland locations, including Westward Ho, Big Al’s, and the nearby churro cart. Those permits suggested that adjustments could be coming to those spaces.

More recently, fans noticed something unusual when reviewing the Magic Kingdom map inside the My Disney Experience app.

The building icon that once represented Westward Ho no longer appears. The general location still shows on the map layout, but the small structure graphic has vanished.

The same thing happened with Big Al’s. The building icon that used to mark the shop on the map has also disappeared.

Although the locations themselves still exist inside the park, their visual representation has quietly been removed from Disney’s digital maps.

Another clue involves merchandise. Items that previously appeared inside Big Al’s have reportedly been relocated to Frontier Trading Post, suggesting that the store may already be transitioning.

Disney has not issued any official statement about the changes.

Frontierland Could Be Preparing for Piston Peak

Because Disney hasn’t explained the map updates, fans have started drawing their own conclusions.

Many believe the changes are connected to the upcoming expansion of Piston Peak National Park. As Disney builds the new land, the surrounding parts of Frontierland may also evolve to match the new theme.

That could mean some existing locations will be redesigned, moved, or replaced so the entire area feels consistent once the expansion opens.

If that happens, Westward Ho and Big Al’s may simply be early signs of the larger transformation taking place.

The Park’s Biggest Transformation Is Still Ahead

Magic Kingdom has always adapted over time, but the current changes stand out for their scale.

The removal of the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island started a major transformation of Frontierland. Now, smaller details—like disappearing map icons—hint that even more adjustments are underway.

Piston Peak National Park and the upcoming Villains Land promise entirely new experiences.

At the same time, they signal the end of certain places that guests have known for decades.

The missing map markers for Westward Ho and Big Al’s may seem small compared to the massive construction nearby.

But they offer another clue that Magic Kingdom is entering a new chapter—and Frontierland is right at the center of it.
