Agile Journey, a company formed by two former Disney employees, Michael Eaton and William Redmann, is suing The Walt Disney Company. They assert that Disney appropriated their innovative technology, designed to assist park guests in organizing their experiences, for its Disney Genie+ system.
The duo of designers claims their patented software, which emphasizes personalized itineraries and efficient attraction management, forms the basis of Genie+, effectively arguing that Disney’s version amounts to theft of their intellectual property.
The lawsuit hinges on allegations of patent infringement, with the former employees accusing Disney of using their technology without permission. According to the claims, Disney has “knowingly or with reckless disregard” infringed upon their patent, which was filed in 2002 and referenced as “Method and Apparatus for Providing Visitors with a Personalized Itinerary and Managed Access to Attractions.”
The patent stipulates a process that was intended to enhance guests’ experiences at theme parks. Agile Journey argues this foundational technology was crucial to the development of the Genie+ system, which allows users to plan park visits more efficiently.

Both Eaton and Redmann bring significant experience to the table, having been integral to the development of what they refer to as revolutionary planning tools for theme park visitors. Their expertise in software development, particularly in creating solutions that enhance user experience in crowded environments, has given rise to the claims they are currently pursuing against Disney. Their work predates the introduction of Disney’s in-house solutions, positioning them as the original innovators in this space.
The legal journey began in December 2022 when the lawsuit was officially filed, nearly unnoticed amidst other Disney news, including leadership changes and various park updates. Disney attempted to dismiss the lawsuit but faced a setback when a federal judge denied their motion. This decision has allowed Agile Journey’s claims to move forward, highlighting the strength of the evidence presented against the company.
Subsequent developments have shown the lawsuit gaining traction. The court’s refusal to dismiss the case underscored the seriousness of the allegations. With the proceedings continuing, the legal battle has garnered attention, especially as the public debates the integrity of intellectual property rights within the entertainment industry and how large corporations like Disney manage innovation claims.
Looking ahead, a trial date has been set for January 14, 2024. This date signifies a crucial moment for both parties, as the outcome could establish important precedents concerning patent rights within the technology realm of theme parks. As Agile Journey continues to push forward with its case, observers will be keen to see how Disney reacts and whether further legal maneuvers will ensue.

At the heart of the lawsuit is the patented technology designed to assist visitors in creating a structured itinerary for their park visits. This technology was envisioned to address the inherent complexities of navigating crowded theme parks, offering tailored suggestions to maximize the guest experience.
Agile Journey’s claims highlight features such as personalized recommendations and access management, which they argue are integral components of what Disney had integrated into its now-defunct Genie+ service.
