Disney World Guest Caught Ignoring One of Resort’s Most Serious Warnings

Disney World has rules guests might occasionally find inconvenient, but some exist for reasons that go far beyond keeping resort operations running smoothly.

Staying out of Seven Seas Lagoon is one of them.

A Disney World guest was recently captured on video swimming through the lagoon near Disney's Polynesian Village Resort at night. The person eventually climbed from the water using a ladder near the dock before running away.

While the strange moment quickly generated reactions online, there's nothing particularly harmless about deciding to take a swim in a Florida lagoon.

Especially this one.

Viral Video Shows Guest Swimming at Disney World

Social media user MomMakingMagic shared the unusual encounter after spotting the swimmer near the Polynesian.

The creator joked that perhaps a Lapu Lapu had something to do with the guest's decision while pointing out that the resort's actual swimming pool wasn't far away.

@mommakingmagic3 not me watching someone take a dip in Seven Seas Lagoon 😂 that Lapu Lapu is no joke. sir, the pool is right there 🍍 #lapulapu #sevenseaslagoon #polynesianresort #disneyworld #disneyhumor ♬ Originalton – Disney.Parents

That's an important distinction.

Disney provides designated swimming pools at its resorts. Seven Seas Lagoon isn't one of them.

Disney warns visitors to stay away from the water around its lakes and lagoons. Those rules become especially important when you remember that Walt Disney World sits in Central Florida, an area where alligators are a natural part of the ecosystem.

Never Assume a Florida Body of Water Is Safe

Disney World can make almost everything feel safer and more controlled than the world outside its gates.

That doesn't mean Disney controls nature.

A body of water surrounded by Disney hotels is still capable of attracting the same wildlife found elsewhere in the state.

Alligators are the most obvious concern, but Disney's waterfront warning signs also mention snakes. Guests don't know what's beneath the surface when they enter a lake or lagoon, either.

There's also boat activity throughout Seven Seas Lagoon.

In other words, there are several good reasons to stay out.

Perhaps the simplest approach for tourists visiting Florida is to assume that a natural body of freshwater could contain an alligator rather than assuming it doesn't.

Disney Has Experienced Tragedy Here Before

Unfortunately, Disney World has a heartbreaking history involving an alligator and Seven Seas Lagoon.

Two-year-old Lane Graves was killed by an alligator near Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa in June 2016.

The tragedy led Disney to install additional barriers and warning signs around waterfront locations. Those signs make the potential wildlife danger much clearer to guests.

That incident happened a decade before this latest swimming video, but it remains important context.

Nobody watching the new footage should assume the swimmer was safe simply because nothing happened.

He was fortunate.

There is an enormous difference between getting away with a dangerous decision and proving that the decision wasn't dangerous in the first place.

Disney Magic Doesn't Change Florida

Most guests probably won't encounter an alligator during their Walt Disney World vacation, and there is no reason for visitors to spend their trip afraid of every lake they pass.

They should, however, respect the environment they're visiting.

Disney World contains lakes, canals, lagoons, wooded areas, and wetlands. Wildlife is part of that environment even when Cinderella Castle, the monorail, or a Disney hotel happens to be nearby.

That's what makes this viral moment more than simply another example of unusual guest behavior.

Seven Seas Lagoon has already provided a heartbreaking reminder of what can happen when humans and Florida wildlife unexpectedly cross paths.

Disney has swimming pools for a reason.

If you're staying at the Polynesian and want to enjoy Seven Seas Lagoon, admire the view, take a boat ride, watch the fireworks, or relax along the resort grounds.

Just don't jump in.
