Disney World Is About to Get Much Bigger, Major 2027 Expansion Confirmed

Walt Disney World is preparing for another major expansion, and the changes coming in 2027 could have a significant impact on how many guests the resort can accommodate.

Disney has already announced several major projects across its theme parks, including new attractions and themed lands. However, its latest expansion isn't happening inside Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney's Hollywood Studios, or Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Instead, Disney is getting ready to welcome thousands of additional overnight stays through a major addition to its existing resort lineup.

With construction moving forward and an official opening date already announced, the company is getting closer to introducing a property that will significantly expand its lodging capacity.

Disney World Moves Forward With Massive Resort Expansion

Disney's Lakeshore Lodge is scheduled to officially open on July 1, 2027, bringing 967 new accommodations to Walt Disney World.

The new resort sits along Bay Lake and will offer guests another waterfront destination when planning their Disney vacations.

Now, new construction permits suggest Disney is moving into another important stage of development.

According to WDWMAGIC, Walt Disney Imagineering recently filed three Notices of Commencement involving signage and themed set elements at the upcoming resort.

The filings identify SPI and ThemeWorks as contractors involved in installing different features throughout the property.

Two permits cover signage installations, while another involves themed set elements that will contribute to the resort's finished appearance.

These installations typically happen during the later stages of construction, suggesting Disney is continuing to make progress toward its scheduled opening.

However, the permits don't confirm that all major construction work has finished.

Nearly 178,000 Additional Room-Nights Coming in 2027

While the resort's appearance and amenities will certainly attract attention, the number of additional accommodations tells another important story.

Lakeshore Lodge will introduce 967 accommodations when it opens.

Because Disney has scheduled the opening for July 1, the property will have 184 calendar days remaining in 2027.

That creates an interesting calculation.

Multiplying 967 accommodations by 184 days produces 177,928 potential room-nights of additional lodging capacity during the resort's first calendar year.

In other words, Disney could have nearly 178,000 additional room-nights available for booking between July 1 and December 31, 2027.

This doesn't mean 177,928 additional people will visit Disney World. The figure represents the total theoretical accommodation inventory created by the new resort during that period.

It also assumes every accommodation is available each night. Actual availability and occupancy could differ.

Still, the calculation demonstrates just how much Disney's hotel inventory is expected to grow.

What This Expansion Means for Disney World Guests

Adding nearly 1,000 accommodations could give families more options when deciding where to stay during their vacations.

Disney's existing hotels already offer everything from value-priced rooms to deluxe accommodations, but availability can become limited during popular travel periods.

Lakeshore Lodge will provide another choice for guests who prefer staying on Disney property.

Of course, additional hotel inventory doesn't guarantee cheaper vacations.

Disney can still adjust room rates based on demand, travel dates, and other factors. The new resort will also have its own pricing structure.

However, the expansion gives Disney more opportunities to accommodate overnight guests, particularly during busy seasons.

It also represents another major investment in the company's resort business as Disney continues developing its Florida property.

Disney's 2027 Expansion Is Getting Closer

With reservations already available to all guests, Disney's Lakeshore Lodge is no longer just a future construction project.

The resort has an announced opening date, and Imagineering's latest permits indicate that work continues on the details that will help complete the property.

For guests, the expansion means another place to stay during their Disney World vacations.

For Disney, it means hundreds of additional accommodations and the potential for nearly 178,000 additional room-nights during the second half of 2027 alone.

And while Disney's upcoming theme park additions may attract more attention, this resort expansion could play an important role in accommodating the visitors who come to experience them.
