Disney World Just Had To Give Many Guests Their Money Back This Week

Guests at EPCOT got an unexpected surprise this week—and not the good kind.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, one of Walt Disney World’s most popular rides, experienced a sudden shutdown on Wednesday that left guests unable to board for the rest of the day. And for many families who paid extra to skip the standby line, the situation felt like a major letdown.

Thankfully, Disney responded quickly by issuing full refunds to those who had purchased Lightning Lane access. But this wasn’t just a one-time fluke—and that’s why fans are starting to grow concerned.

A Sudden Silence in the Galaxy

The ride stopped operating early in the afternoon and, despite hopes that it would return to service, never reopened. Guests affected by the closure received a direct message from EPCOT’s Vice President Matt Simon, who offered an apology and encouraged visitors to enjoy other offerings around the park.

While the message showed that Disney was paying attention, it did little to soften the blow for those who built their EPCOT day around this particular attraction.

Not the First Time

This isn’t the first recent issue for Cosmic Rewind. Over the last month, the coaster has had a string of technical problems—some causing brief delays, others resulting in full-day closures like this one. For a ride of this magnitude and popularity, that’s a big deal.

With its rotating ride vehicles, immersive screens, and synchronized music system, Cosmic Rewind is one of the most complex attractions Disney has ever built. That cutting-edge technology is part of what makes it so fun—but it’s also what makes it prone to hiccups.

And when those hiccups become regular, they start to feel less like bad luck and more like a pattern.

What You Can Do if You’re Visiting Soon

If you’re planning a visit to EPCOT and have this ride at the top of your list, here’s what you need to know:

  • Check the app: The My Disney Experience app will show you if the ride is currently open. It won’t explain why a ride is down, but it will let you know if it’s running or not.

  • Plan a backup: EPCOT is packed with fantastic attractions. Don’t let one ride closure throw off your entire day. Consider hitting up Frozen Ever After, Soarin’ Around the World, or Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure instead.

  • Understand the risk: While Disney issued refunds this time, not every guest will walk away happy. If this attraction is your #1 must-do, be prepared that things might not go as planned.

Uncertainty Lingers

At this time, Disney hasn’t released any technical explanation for the ongoing closures. Whether it’s a maintenance issue or something more serious under the hood, the coaster’s recent track record suggests that reliability is becoming a problem.

Guests love Cosmic Rewind for its speed, story, and style—but if it keeps going down unexpectedly, the frustration could start to outweigh the fun. For now, the ride remains one of EPCOT’s most ambitious experiences… just maybe not the most dependable.

Andrew Boardwine

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
