Disney World Medical Calls Took a Dramatic Turn, Leaving Two Guests Facing Felony Charges

Emergency crews at Walt Disney World respond to countless medical calls every year, often without guests ever realizing anything happened. Most situations are resolved quickly as firefighters, EMTs, and deputies work together to help visitors in need.

Two recent incidents, however, followed a very different path.

Separate emergency calls at EPCOT and Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort eventually led to arrests after authorities say first responders were assaulted while trying to perform their duties. Although the cases have no connection to one another, both illustrate how quickly medical situations can spiral into criminal investigations.

Son Arrested During Medical Emergency at EPCOT

One of the incidents happened on June 5 inside EPCOT's China Pavilion.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, emergency responders arrived after a woman suffered a medical emergency. As firefighters and EMTs worked to evaluate her, her son, Daniel Hughes, allegedly tried to force his way through the medical team.

Investigators say responders repeatedly instructed Hughes to step back so they could safely treat the patient. Instead, authorities allege he pushed one EMT multiple times while attempting to stand beside his mother.

The EMT was reportedly moved by the contact but was not injured.

A battalion chief soon stepped in to separate Hughes from the responders before requesting assistance from sheriff's deputies.

Officials have not released any information about the mother's condition or what prompted the medical emergency.

Different Accounts of What Happened

After his arrest, Hughes acknowledged making contact with the EMT but disputed how it happened.

According to deputies, Hughes said he had only used the back of his fingers to lightly move the EMT because he wanted to remain close to his mother during what he believed was a serious medical crisis.

The EMT elected to pursue charges, and Hughes was arrested on a charge of battery on an emergency medical care provider. He later pleaded not guilty, according to court records.

Resort Medical Call Ends in Another Arrest

The second incident occurred on May 10 at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort.

Emergency responders were dispatched after concerns were raised about the condition of Effie Crilly, a 44-year-old visitor from New Jersey.

According to investigators, firefighters believed Crilly needed medical evaluation because of her level of intoxication. She reportedly declined to go to the hospital, leading responders to request assistance from the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Deputy Derron Callwood arrived and attempted to persuade her to accept treatment.

Authorities say that conversation ended when Crilly allegedly used profanity before forcefully pushing the deputy in the chest.

Deputies restrained her and secured her to a stretcher before she was transported to Dr. Phillips Hospital.

After receiving medical clearance, Crilly was taken to jail and charged with battery on a law enforcement officer. Court records show she has pleaded not guilty.

Rare Incidents at One of the World's Busiest Resorts

Walt Disney World welcomes millions of visitors every year, and medical emergencies are an unavoidable reality at a destination of that size. Disney's emergency response teams are trained to handle everything from minor injuries to life-threatening situations, often without disrupting the experience for surrounding guests.

While these two incidents remain unusual, they demonstrate the difficult situations emergency personnel sometimes face beyond simply providing medical care.

Instead of ending with patients receiving treatment and returning to their vacations, both calls required sheriff's deputies to intervene. What began as medical emergencies ultimately resulted in felony charges that will now play out through the legal system.
