Disney Removes Three Historic Parts of Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom

Three decades of Tomorrowland history have been quietly dismantled at Magic Kingdom Park over the past several weeks. Here's what Disney Parks fans need to know.

WDWNT reported on June 10 that the roof had been removed from a tower at the entrance to Tomorrowland in the Cinderella Castle Hub — the third such structure to come down in recent weeks at Magic Kingdom Park. The tower had been part of the Tomorrowland landscape since 1994.

Walt Disney World Resort installed a scrim around the tower earlier this week, a move that has now occurred twice before an imminent demolition in this same stretch of Magic Kingdom Park. The structural components of the rocket-style tower remain in place for the moment, with rust and weather damage visible on the supports, but their removal appears to be a matter of when, not if. A piece of scrim also covers a red-painted metal ring inside the structure that's visible from Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe.

Scrim continues to cover the former location of a previously removed tower near Tomorrowland Terrace.

What Happened to the Other Two

The June 10 removal is the culmination of a rapid series of changes that began earlier this month, when Walt Disney World Resort removed two towers from the Tomorrowland entrance area at Magic Kingdom Park. Each followed the same pattern: scrim appeared first, demolition followed shortly after.

Whether the three removed towers will be replaced by new decorative elements or whether the cleared space represents the final look for the Tomorrowland entrance hasn't been addressed by Walt Disney World Resort. It's also unclear whether the removals were driven by a deliberate creative decision to evolve the land's aesthetic or simply by the practical necessity of dealing with structures showing significant signs of age and weather damage.

Tomorrowland in the Middle of a Transformation

Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom Park has been in a state of active evolution for several years. TRON Lightcycle / Run opened in 2023 as the land's most significant addition in decades. Walt Disney Imagineering recently updated Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, and a complete overhaul of Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress has been announced.

Rock repainting along the Cinderella Castle moat near the former tower sites was also recently completed, suggesting a coordinated visual refresh of the entire Tomorrowland entrance corridor.
