Disney just gave us our biggest look yet at what’s coming to Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
During its D23 presentation, Disney revealed several new locations planned for the Monsters, Inc. (2001)-themed land, including restaurants, a new show, shopping, and more.
But perhaps the biggest announcement involves when guests can actually step inside.
Disney confirmed that parts of Monstropolis will open in 2027, even while construction continues on the land’s massive door coaster.
That means Disney won’t necessarily wait for the headline attraction before allowing humans into the monster world.
A New Monsters Inc. Show Is Coming
One of the newly confirmed additions is Welcome to Monstropolis, a show coming to the Glob Theater.
Mike and Sulley will host the production, which centers around introducing human visitors to their city. Sulley has apparently prepared a smaller show, while Mike has some bigger surprises planned.
Disney Legend Randy Newman has also written an original song called “Welcome to Monstropolis” for the show. Disney says this marks the first time Newman has composed a song specifically for a Disney theme park.
Disney Reveals Two Monstropolis Restaurants
Guests will have multiple places to eat while exploring the new land.
Disney announced Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, themed around Archie, the six-legged Fear Tech mascot familiar to Monsters University (2013) fans. Disney describes it as the place to grab Monstropolis’ top-rated pizza.
Then there’s Harryhausen’s Restaurant.
Fans may remember Harryhausen’s as the restaurant where Mike and Celia had their memorable date in Monsters, Inc.(2001). Disney is bringing the location into the land with a menu Imagineering says will be unlike anything else currently offered at Walt Disney World.
Harryhausen’s will also feature a new Audio-Animatronics sushi chef whose multiple tentacles will prepare monster creations. Disney notes that sushi won’t be the only thing available.
Monsters University Is Getting Some Representation
Disney also announced the Monsters University Alumni Club.
The location will feature references to student organizations, fraternities, and sororities from MU. Guests can also find the Scarer’s Club inside, honoring legendary scarers from the school’s history.
For merchandise, Disney is adding the Scareporium, where human tourists can pick up souvenirs from their visit.
Together, these additions give us a much clearer idea of how Disney plans to make Monstropolis feel like an actual city rather than simply the backdrop for a coaster.
Monstropolis Starts Opening in 2027
Disney has created an in-universe reason for humans to visit, too.
The city has established a Department of Human Relations and created H.U.M.A.N. Day, meaning “Humans Understanding Monsters Are Nice.” The celebration allows humans to explore the city, meet its residents, and experience monster culture firsthand.
Disney hasn’t revealed exactly which portions of the land will open first.
What we do know is that guests will begin entering Monstropolis in 2027 while work continues on the door coaster.
With new dining, entertainment, shopping, and plenty of Monsters, Inc. (2001) details planned, Hollywood Studios’ newest world is starting to come into focus—and we’ll get our first chance to explore it next year.
