Disney World Guests Receive Bad News From Spirit Airlines

The sound of rolling luggage, excited chatter from families in Mickey ears, and the nervous hum of travelers hurrying toward departure gates—Orlando International Airport (MCO) is no stranger to chaos. But for frequent fliers and Disney World vacationers, there’s an undercurrent of uncertainty that feels heavier than usual this fall.

Airfare prices are already climbing ahead of the holidays, and travelers are watching closely as airlines continue to struggle. For guests planning long-awaited Disney trips, the reliability of their airline choice could mean the difference between magical memories and vacation heartbreak.

At the center of it all is Spirit Airlines, one of Orlando’s busiest carriers and a budget-friendly favorite for theme park fans. The airline has long been a go-to option for travelers seeking cheaper flights to Walt Disney World. But behind the cheerful branding and low fares, troubling financial turbulence is stirring—and it’s now hitting home for Orlando-based crews.

Spirit Airlines Confirms Furloughs at Orlando Airport

On September 23rd, Spirit Airlines confirmed that 1,800 employees nationwide will be furloughed starting December 1st. Among them, 350 are flight attendants based at Orlando International Airport (MCO), according to the Orlando Business Journal.

The announcement follows Spirit’s August 29th bankruptcy protection filing, its second in less than a year, and subsequent September route cuts across 12 U.S. airports. While MCO wasn’t initially on the chopping block, the ripple effects have now reached Orlando—just as the busy holiday travel season approaches.

Spirit explained in a statement, “As part of our ongoing restructuring, we are taking steps to align staffing with our fleet size and expected flight volume. We recognize the impact of this decision on affected team members, and we are committed to treating them with care and respect during this process.”

How This Could Affect Disney World Guests

With furloughs taking effect in December, Disney-bound guests flying Spirit through Orlando may see:

  • Fewer available flights during peak dates.

  • Potentially longer wait times for boarding and customer service support.

  • Last-minute scheduling changes, especially around the holidays.

Insider tip: If you’re flying Spirit to Orlando between Thanksgiving and Christmas, book flights as early in the day as possible. Morning departures are less prone to cascading delays.

Travel Hacks to Stay Ahead

Here are some proactive steps Disney World visitors can take:

  • Download the Spirit app to track real-time updates and gate changes.

  • Join TSA PreCheck or Clear to shave off long security waits.

  • Pack light with a personal item to avoid checked bag chaos.

  • Have a backup airline in mind—Southwest, JetBlue, and Delta all maintain strong MCO operations.

Frequent Orlando travelers also note that the airport’s A and B security checkpoints often move faster than C, depending on time of day. Checking TSA wait times before heading out can save you stress.

Why It Matters to Disney World Fans

For families planning Disney vacations, airline disruptions carry a uniquely emotional weight. A delayed or canceled flight doesn’t just affect arrival time—it can mean missing a once-in-a-lifetime reservation at Cinderella’s Royal Table or losing out on a coveted Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party ticket.

Spirit has been Orlando’s second-busiest carrier, serving 7.83 million passengers in 2024. That volume means any staffing shakeup directly affects thousands of Disney guests who rely on Spirit as their affordable gateway to the magic.

Online, fans are already expressing concern. Social media threads show travelers debating whether to risk Spirit bookings this winter, with some vowing to pay more for peace of mind while others hope the budget option will hold steady through the storm.

The Bottom Line

If you’re heading to Walt Disney World this December and flying Spirit into Orlando, stay flexible, monitor updates closely, and prepare for possible changes. The furloughs may be labeled “temporary,” but for both flight attendants and theme park guests, the uncertainty is real.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
