But what would you do if a catastrophic event, like the fictional zombie apocalypse? You’d be too busy running for your life and battling zombies to worry about heading to Walt Disney World.

As it turns out, running to the Walt Disney World Resort might be one of the best ways to survive the zombie apocalypse. And this isn’t just some Disney fandom rumor.

Researchers at Cornell University (yes, the Ivy League one) looked into a possible zombie apocalypse and found that one of the safest places to be during this hypothetical attack is the Walt Disney World Resort. Well, not the entire resort, but one specific part of Disney World.

It turns out that one of the safest places to be in case zombies attack is the utility tunnels under the Magic Kingdom. The nine-acre tunnel system has enough food and water to sustain you for months, you are out of plain sight, and there are only a few entrances that can easily be sealed.

Walt Disney originally built the tunnel system to solve two significant problems with the Magic Kingdom. The first issue was Florida’s high water table. Disney built the tunnel system at ground level because digging into the moist Florida ground was impossible.

This means what you see at the Magic Kingdom, Main Street, U.S.A., and every ride and attraction is technically on the second floor. Walt Disney could also use the concrete tunnels to run all the utilities without guests ever seeing them.

The other issue the tunnels solved was moving cast members around the theme park. Walt hated the idea of cast members being seen in costume in a land that didn’t fit their story.

But in case the end of days is upon us and you need a safe place to hide out, grab your friends and family, run to the Magic Kingdom, lock the doors, and enjoy your shelter from the zombies.

However, Cornell researchers found two significant issues with taking shelter at Disney World. The first is getting there. If you don’t live near Disney World, you’ll have to find somewhere else to spend your apocalypse time. They suggest your local Wal-Mart or Costco.

The second issue is that, according to their estimates, the zombies would only take 30 days to overrun the entire state. At some point, you’ll run out of food and water, or the people you chose to hide out with annoy you, and you’ll have to leave the shelter of Magic Kingdom’s steel doors.

And when you decide to leave your safe house in the Magic Kingdom, you are surrounded by zombies. Think of it as the ultimate Haunted Mansion.

So, if this hypothetical zombie apocalypse happens, you can head to the Disney Parks or not. It appears that either way, we’re going to lose.
