One of Disneyland's longest-running nighttime traditions is showing its age, and the problems are becoming increasingly difficult for guests to ignore.
Fantasmic! has been part of Disneyland since 1992, transforming the Rivers of America into Mickey Mouse's imagination through characters, fountains, projections, fire, and pyrotechnics.
But 34 years after its debut, Fantasmic! is missing several elements that once made it one of Disney's biggest nighttime productions.
Disney hasn't announced plans to permanently close the show. Still, the growing list of missing effects raises questions about whether Fantasmic! can continue operating in its current form much longer.
Fantasmic! Problems Continue at Disneyland
According to a report from WDWNT, recent performances have operated without fireworks and other pyrotechnics.
That's only one of the problems.
During one Saturday performance, only 15 of the show's 21 fountains appeared operational. Pyrotechnic barges have also been missing during some performances.
Without the normal pyrotechnics, Disney has modified other portions of Fantasmic!. Mickey's disappearing and reappearing finale effect has been absent, while Maleficent has appeared through a simplified contingency setup.
The character lineup has faced changes, too.
A missing barge recently forced Disney to move Rapunzel and Flynn Rider to another vessel, removing Belle and the Beast from that portion of the performance.
Other characters and elements have reportedly been reduced during select shows.
For an entertainment production as complicated as Fantasmic!, occasional technical problems aren't unusual. The concern is just how many pieces are now missing at the same time.
The 2023 Fire Changed Fantasmic!
Fantasmic!'s current struggles can't be separated from what happened on April 22, 2023.
During a performance, the enormous Maleficent dragon caught fire and became engulfed in flames.
Nobody was injured, but Disneyland ultimately kept Fantasmic! closed for more than a year.
When the show returned in May 2024, the dragon didn't come back with it.
Disney instead introduced a modified battle between Mickey and Maleficent. More than two years later, the dragon remains missing.
Aladdin's flying magic carpet effect hasn't returned either.
The result is a Fantasmic! that still follows its familiar premise but doesn't deliver all of the spectacle longtime Disneyland visitors remember.
Could Disneyland Eventually Overhaul Fantasmic!?
Disney hasn't confirmed a major refurbishment, but an overhaul increasingly feels like something Disneyland will eventually have to consider if Fantasmic! is going to survive long term.
A new Maleficent dragon has reportedly been in development. However, a larger refurbishment designed to restore and improve other effects has reportedly been shelved while Disneyland focuses on other projects.
That could always change.
Disney could eventually close Fantasmic! for an extended period and address multiple problems at once. That could include repairing aging effects, restoring missing elements, improving reliability, and potentially introducing a new dragon.
Disney could also use that opportunity to reimagine significant portions of the 34-year-old production.
For now, though, nothing has been announced.
Fantasmic! remains part of Disneyland, and there is no confirmed final performance.
Still, the show has never fully returned to what it was before the 2023 fire. With even more effects now disappearing or experiencing problems, Disneyland may eventually face a choice.
Either Fantasmic! receives the investment necessary to restore its scale, or one of Disneyland's most famous nighttime traditions could face an increasingly uncertain future.
