It may be more popular than the likes of Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Central Florida, but that doesn’t mean Dollywood Parks & Resorts is immune to operational and guest issues. That said, the resort is a key part of America’s rich theme park history, and Dolly Parton herself has weighed in on Dollywood vacations following a turbulent year.

Recent Dollywood News

Big changes are coming to one of the world’s most beloved theme park destinations, Dollywood, as guests will soon face limited access during a significant portion of August. Known for its Southern hospitality, thrilling rides, and immersive cultural experiences, Dollywood will temporarily reduce its hours and close on select days ahead of the highly anticipated Harvest Festival.

Starting on August 11, 2024, the park will close every Tuesday and Thursday for four weeks, significantly impacting visitor access as the park prepares for the upcoming festival. For those planning late summer trips, it’s important to note that Dollywood will not be open on August 13, 15, 20, 22, 27, 29, and September 3 and 5.

During this period, Dollywood’s operating hours will also be reduced on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The park will close at 7 p.m. instead of the typical 10 p.m., which will limit guest time in the park. The shortened hours will shift from the park’s usual operations, reducing the time guests can experience Dollywood’s signature attractions, shows, and Southern-inspired cuisine.

Weekend operations will remain consistent, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., except for September 7 and 8, which will also see earlier closures. These changes might feel like a setback for Dollywood fans, but the excitement of the upcoming Harvest Festival is sure to make up for any inconvenience.

Dolly Parton Addresses Dollywood Vacations After Turbulent Year

As preparations begin to welcome the Harvest Festival to Pigeon Forge and the Great Smoky Mountains, Dolly Parton herself has weighed in on her favorite things to do at Dollywood, the resort she co-owns with Herschend Family Entertainment.

“When you come to Dollywood, everybody has a different agenda,” the national treasure told Travel + Leisure at the newly opened HeartSong Lodge & Resort earlier this summer. “We’ve got some of everything—it all depends on how you want to spend your day.”

Parton outlined what certain guests might want to see and do while visiting her famed theme park.

“It all depends on who you are, according to your personality and who’s traveled with you. If you’ve got kids, they’ll want to go on the roller coasters. If you’re a couple, people love to see the arts and crafts. Women like to go to all the places where they can buy clothes, shoes, purses, and merchandise.”

The songstress herself talked about how much entertainment like Forever Country, featuring 80s and 90s music, and the Southern gospel of The Kingdom Heirs, mean to her.

“That’s just so much of me,” she told Travel + Leisure. “So many country singers started here at Dollywood, and so that’s really a wonderful compliment to us!”

Parton’s comments to the publication come after the Dollywood Resort in Pigeon Forge has navigated a string of closures and another more sinister criminal investigation.

Earlier this year, the entire Dollywood Resort had to close to all guests thanks to severe storm weather in the area. On May 8, 2024, Dollywood announced its closure.

“PARK UPDATE: Due to severe thunderstorms approaching Pigeon Forge this afternoon and through the evening, Dollywood will close today (Wednesday, May 8) at 4 p.m.,” the resort’s official channels stated. “The park will reopen on Thursday, May 9 at 10 a.m.”

Later, in mid-July, Dollywood once more had to close to guests due to a water main leak. At the time, Dollywood spokesperson Wes Ramey confirmed that crews were onsite to assess the damage and risk of the problem.

In a more sinister turn, an employee of a Dollywood contractor, Angelo McQueen, was arrested was sex crimes in July.

“The subject was an APDC Cleaning Services, Inc. (APDC) employee, a third-party staffing service that recruits and hires international workers. APDC was responsible for background identity checks and employment authorization of its employees assigned to Dollywood,” Dollywood wrote in a statement (via WVLT).

The resort later confirmed that Mr. McQueen was not working at the time of his arrest and that it had ceased its business relationship with APDC Cleaning Services, Inc.

A highlight of the festival is the mesmerizing Great Pumpkin LumiNights, an enchanting nighttime spectacle where thousands of carved pumpkins illuminate Dollywood’s grounds. From whimsical scarecrows to towering pumpkin sculptures, the glowing displays create a magical and family-friendly atmosphere that draws visitors from all over.

And as Parton said in her Travel + Leisure feature, Dollywood is perfect for foodies. “If you’re a pig, you’ll want to go eat!” the singer said.

Adding to the autumnal experience, guests will be treated to seasonal dishes that celebrate the rich flavors of the region. Dollywood’s renowned Southern cuisine takes center stage at the festival, with fall-inspired offerings such as hearty soups, pumpkin treats, and apple-based desserts complementing fan favorites like the world-famous cinnamon bread.

The combination of festive food, lively music, and handcrafted artistry captures the essence of Appalachian heritage and makes the Harvest Festival a can’t-miss event on Dollywood’s annual calendar.

About Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
